Breck Eisner to Remake David Cronenberg’s The Brood

Yesterday we reported that the long-gestating remake of Creature from the Black Lagoon had finally found a new director in Carl Erik Rinsch. But what happened to Breck Eisner, the guy who was originally supposed to direct it? Well, right now Eisner is currently finishing up his remake of George Romero’s The Crazies, but it appears that he may already have another horror remake lined up and ready to go right after that: David Cronenberg’s The Brood. He has also been developing a remake of Flash Gordon for a few years now. Sadly it seems you can carve out a pretty decent career nowadays just by focusing exclusively on remakes.

The Brood remake was first announced back in 2007, when Spyglass Entertainment picked up the rights. Although there are a ton of Cronenberg films in the process of being remade right now, this is one that arguably deserves an update more than others since not many people have seen it (myself included). The story revolves around a group of deformed children who carry out acts of violent revenge for their mother. But is Eisner a good choice to direct this? His only major feature film to date is the 2005 film Sahara, which doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. I suppose we’ll have to wait and see how The Crazies turns out before we decide if we should be excited or outraged.

    no.

  • Christ. I JUST watched “The Brood” for the first time this year and I loved it. I’m pretty annoyed by this news. I know that remakes *can* be good, but the lighting and cinematography are so good in the original, not to mention the amazing acting job of the main character’s daughter, I definitely do NOT want to see this remake.

As for “The Crazies”. . . sigh. I saw that movie for the first time about a year or two ago, and again, it doesn’t need a remake.

  • Remake of “The Brood”? Okay. Breck Eisner directing? No. God no.

And a remake will be much too tame for what this film demands.

    Boo.

I too watched “The Brood” for the first time this year, along with “Rabid” and “Shivers”. Early Cronenberg is untouchable, this is a dumb idea.

  • I’m not one of those peeps that hates on all remakes. Some have great potential to beat the original (Clash of the Titans); but a whole bunch of CG belly-babies won’t help this guy beat the original. Cronenberg is the God of Body Horror.

  • Breck Eisner is a symbol for everything wrong with Hollywood – a talentless hack buttressed by his father’s ego (yes, his dad is that Eisner)
