Tobey Maguire to Play Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit?

Looks like we’ve got our first big casting rumour this week for The Hobbit, which as we reported last week has now officially entered the audition stage. The old rumour of James McAvoy playing the lead role of Bilbo Baggins has long since been shot down, but now the good folks over at Latino Review have dug up an interesting lead on another star who is apparently itching to grow some hair on his feet: Tobey Maguire!

While doing press for Brothers last month, Maguire was asked what director he’d like to work with next. His reply? Guillermo Del Toro. He also hinted that he was currently pursuing a project with the man. After checking some sources, Latino Review managed to confirm that he is indeed in “early talks” for the role. It doesn’t necessarily mean he’s close to a deal at this point, and they’re probably still looking at other actors as well, but hey, it seems like a perfect fit to me. Am I the only one who gets Tobey Maguire and Elijah Wood mixed up all the time? Seriously, they have at least a passing resemblance, and Maguire is fairly short as well (not that they can’t work around height issues). Plus he’s a big name with geek cred that can carry a franchise. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if this actually works out. What do you think, is Tobey Maguire the right Hobbit for the job?

Is Toby Maguire right for Bilbo Baggins? No.
Of course, I didn’t think he was right for Spider-Man.

  • what!? no it doesn’t pass the smell test.

    how bout Anton Yelchin

  • AdamH

It doesn’t matter if he looks like Elijah Woods at all! I hope they cast an unknown as Bilbo, I really really hope its not Toby..

  • Tommy

I agree with an unknown that at least looks like a younger version of Ian Holm.

  • Mike

Tobey Maguire as Bilbo Baggins would work.
Tobey looks like he’s related to Elijah Wood anyways
maybe a cousin. I guess this will be the big news that will be announced for Dec 15th.

    Er, Ian Holm?

Bilbo is not supposedly to be significantly older from THE HOBBIT to LOTR. The power of the ring stops the process of aging on Bilbo. As Gandalf says, “You haven’t aged a day”.

  • Maopheus

Bilbo is not a very young Hobbit so someone youthful looking would not necessarily work. Then again, in LotR, Frodo is about 20 years younger than the literary version so it worked out to have Elijah Wood playing Frodo. However I think it would work better to have an older actor playing Bilbo.

It has been a long time since I read the “Hobbit” but I never had the impression that he was young or that hobbits age slow and live long.

  • TheAllKnowingGod

Hobbits do live long. In LOTR Bilbo is 111. In THE HOBBIT he is 50. But Gandalf make a specific reference in both the book and THE FILM that Bilbo hasn’t aged a day since then.

If THE HOBBIT is supposed to be in continuity with Jackson’s LOTR then having anyone but Ian Holm, especially someone as young as Maguire makes NO FUCKING SENSE WHATSOEVER!

  • Nick Robertson

This is actually pretty brilliant. I just hope he can hold an accent.

  • Nick Robertson

oops – – looks like his publicist denies the connection. That doesn’t mean a thing though.

  • Napalm

wow. that was unexpected. but i’m excited! he’s a pretty good actor and i think it will be different and refreshing for the audiences to see Tobey in a new role, especially in a role like this! and no, i don’t see the Elijah Wood resemblance at all lol.

True! I’m sure through the magic of make-up, they can take a FEW years off him.

david tennent an unkown actor and can play the role the same way ian holm did

When I told my 11 year old daughter that Tobey Maguire might play Bilbo Baggins in the Hobbit – she asked if she could go see the movie. She liked Spiderman and thinks it would be cool to see him play the Hobbit.
