So, about this Pride and Prejudice and Zombies movie… it just got a lot more interesting. When I first heard about Seth Grahame-Smith’s mash-up of the 1813 Jane Austen novel Pride and Prejudice, it sounded to me like just another ironic fanboy creation. Kind of amusing, sure, but mostly appealing because of the ridiculous title rather than the actual content itself. I mean, could it be any more obvious that all you need to do is slap the word “zombie” on something to sell it? On top of that, moving forward with a film adaptation at this point in time kinda screams out Zombieland wanna-be.
But then last week it was announced that Natalie Portman had signed on to star in the movie, which instantly gave the project a little bit more credibility. This has been followed up by Pajiba, who claim to have the inside scoop that David O. Russell (Three Kings, I Heart Huckabees) has actually signed on to write and direct. Weird! This does not seem like his kind of thing at all, and considering his filmography, he is almost the last guy I would expect to see land this gig. I will be very curious to see if he can find a way to make it his own — and whether or not he can avoid clashing with Lionsgate and Richard Kelly’s Darko Films, the folks who are producing it. What do you think about this news? Will Pride and Prejudice and Zombies turn out to be something unique, or is it headed for disaster?
