Neil LaBute’s Death at a Funeral Remake Trailer

I haven’t seen Frank Oz’s original Death at a Funeral, but I have been led to believe that it’s not quite as goofy and slapsticky as this new version of the film starring Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence and Tracy Morgan. Or is it? If I didn’t know anything about this movie, I would be tempted to think it was a new Farrelly Brothers flick and would probably turn up my nose just based on the trailer alone. Still, I have to admit, there are a few things that intrigue me about this remake.

For one, Tracy Morgan can make me laugh in pretty much any situation. Another potential win is the fact that the movie is directed by Neil LaBute (Lakeview Terrace, In The Company of Men), who seems like an edgy choice to direct an otherwise harmless comedy. (On the other hand, he also did Nurse Betty and The Wicker Man, so it could probably go either way.) On top of that, it’s just nice to see Luke Wilson back in a movie that’s not going direct-to-DVD for once. Overall I’m still on the fence with this one, but check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think. Death at a Funeral hits theatres on April 16th, 2010.

  • How lazy is it to remake a movie made 3 years ago. Admittedly, I haven’t seen the original either. And One thing I can say is that this can be a completely different movie from the original considering the disparity in tastes between the “African-American” crowd, and a crowd of WASPs in the UK. A nice but minor example is removing the black couple from the Couples Retreat poster.

So in a way, I can see how this movie would appeal to an audience that probably never would watch the original film otherwise.

Is LaBute still edgy? It seems like he’s been banging the same drum for a long time now.
I saw Lake View Terrace. It seems like the work of someone no longer relevent.

It seems ballsy on paper but I’m betting the film won’t go there.

Really? a remake of death at a funeral?

I saw the original and liked it. This news kind of disappoints me.

The orginal was a great comedy. I feel bad that this trailer completely ruined the this version for anyone who hasnt seen it. It completely gives away everything shocking and funny that happens in the movie.

I’ve said for a while that I won’t see anything with Martin Lawrence until he stars in Bad Boys 3.

I agree with Justin that this trailer seemed to show too much even though I haven’t seen the original film.

The original was phenomenal no need for a remake

This is absolutely disgusting. They didn’t change any of the tag lines in the film, they only stuck a bunch of one tone actors in to recite the script with their own little flares. They couldn’t even pick a different guy to play the fathers gay lover… IT’S THE SAME GUY FROM THE ORIGINAL MOVIE! If you want to see this movie done RIGHT, see the original. This review just makes me say WTF.
