  • Goon

re: Owen Wilson’s character in Life Aquatic. I’d blame the casting if anything. I think the choice to have him be from Kentucky is interesting, that landlocked ‘bumpkin’ area vs. an oceanographer.

  • There’s a difference between being from Kentucky and being a pipe smoking cartoon character from Kentucky. But aside from the land vs. sea idea, i still think the character isn’t that inspired and is quite unmemorable, both in Wilson’s performance and the writing.

  • Goon

I don’t know, I think the right casting can overcome writing or at least adapt to it. I have no idea though who I’d put in his place that could play off Bill Murray to make that relationship work better, so I’d surrender the point.

  • is it even fair to criticize a Wes Anderson character as cartoony – which one isn’t? and I say that as a person that likes his films. you guys should do a show on directors that create film worlds that allow cartoony characters to work and be acceptable…Tarantino, Anderson, Gilliam, EASTWOOD!

  • It seems like Owen Wilson’s character was written non-cartoony and then they decided to give him a pipe and a stupid accent to cartoon him up as an afterthought.

  • Falsk

Speaking of cartoons, there is just no animation love on this podcast, huh? NO ONE’S interested in reviewing “Princess and the Frog”– Disney’s return to 2D musicals? Is that crickets I hear? Ah well…

  • Primal

All you have to do is look back 1 episode to see their love for animation.

  • Falsk

Meh. One movie hardly equates for love and appreciation for a style. And would anyone REALLY have seen it if it wasn’t Wes Anderson?

I’m not saying there’s zero appearance of animated films in their reviews, but they certainly don’t go out of their way. I mean, In the end it doesn’t really matter. I guess I’m just on the other end of the spectrum.

  • Primal

Sounds like every animated film to come out, needs to be watched and analyzed? Coroline, Up, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Futurama films and Cloudy with a chance of meatballs are the best this year has to offer and they reviewed them. What are they missing? Look up the archives for their versus segment on traditional animation vs. cg animation if you wanna see where they stand on the subject.

I’ve been listening for a couple years now and I know that Greg watches a lot of american animated stuff that he has mentioned on the podcast. Goon has had a ton to say on the subject in the comment section.

  • I don’t think we have a problem with animated movies specifically, it’s just that the past few years have been flooded with generic CG movies that have kind of worn us down.

Regarding The Princess and The Frog, I will say that it’s cool to see Disney return to their 2D roots, but I feel pretty much the same way about it that I do Enchanted. I’m sure it’s good, but I’m in no rush to see it.

  • An accurate quote from Jay in this episode that no one seemed to catch. I had to listen to it twice to make sure I heard it right…

“…light skinned black people. I’m don’t totally understand what the deal is there. If they all cum in the same family members or what.”

  • Goon

you gotta admit the way expectations have risen and fallen and risen again make the Avatar hype one of the biggest stories of the year… rollercoaster ride.

  • big L

is it true greg was seen BACKstage at a fray concert?
