The King of Fighters Trailer Starring Ray Park and Maggie Q

Hey look, it’s another low budget video game adaptation that’s got direct-to-DVD written all over it! The King of Fighters is based on a series of fighting games that was first released for the Neo Geo console and in arcades back in the mid-’90s. Since the Neo Geo was the uber-expensive video game system that only rich kids had, I never really got into it, but they’re still making new installments today so it’s definitely got a following. The movie doesn’t seem to be based on the plot of any one particular game, and according to Wikipedia, has a sci-fi twist that involves members of three legendary fighting clans who get transported to alternate dimensions where they must fight the inhabitants of each world. This promo trailer, however, doesn’t convey much of a plot at all.

Gordon Chan (Fist of Legend, The Medallion) is directing the movie, and it stars Sean Faris (Never Back Down) as the main character Kyo Kusanagi, a cocky young martial artist with pyrokinetic powers. Ray Park plays Rugal Bernstein, the black market arms dealer, while Maggie Q is Mai Shiranui, a female ninja. Basically it looks comparable to DOA: Dead or Alive, but not quite as campy. Either way, I give them points for the shameless use of the Batman Begins score in order to win people over. What do you think, will you be checking this out? The King of Fighters will be out sometime in 2010, although I’ll be pretty surprised if it gets a decent theatrical release. Check out the trailer after the jump.

    Fights doesn’t happen in another dimension. And when when you involve mai shiranui then at least put in the bogards brothers. BTW Rugal doesn’t wear a karate gi. Now it will probably lay next to the legend of Chun Li.

    Stick with Kyo and Iori at first then the orochi saga.

    Looks terrible. Isn’t King of Fighters a game that features fighters from other fighting games that are made by SNK? I remember the guy with the blond ponytail and red cap.

  • KING OF FIGHTERS MOVIE.

    This movie version of the SNK 2d fighting game series makes a big screen movie debut with American actor playing Kyo and Maggie Q as Mai its just going to become a lackluster of the series and upcoming Tekken movie won’t be a success as well.
    I bet ya the KOF movie will fail at the box office like that Chun Li movie did Gordon Chan thinks he played the game hes wrong none of the filmmakers have not play the game they just made the movie with this silly dimension bullshit plot.
    King Of Fighters is going to be the worst VG movie of the year.
