So I finally got a chance to see this in the theaters today and I have to say that I loved it! I felt that it gave a very honest look into part of the African American culture. Not only that but it was also highly entertaining!

I saw this at the Philly Film Festival and loved it. Especially the part where everyone around me was laughing at stuff that I didn’t know was supposed to be funny. But it was definitely a great watch.

Every culture has it’s odd obsessions with vanity and particular image or body-changing processes. For example, east Asians (of which I am one) tend to be into cosmetic surgery, especially young women altering their eyelids to appear more “Western” (read white) and getting nose jobs and whatnot. Also you get a lot of Asians lightening their hair. On the other hand, you almost never hear/see/read of Caucasians wanting to appear more black/Asian/some other race. Things that make you go hmmm.

Thanks. One area I think I neglected to cover though is through all of these segments, there are underlying questions raised about one’s racial identity, and if its empowering to now be able to make your hair whatever way you want, or if running away from natural black hair is a bad thing. I’ve been looking at some other reviews since writing this and would recommend anyone intrigued to scroll through some other reviews, such as this one:
