  • “Capitalism: A Love Story” should be free to watch, because charging people watch it is promoting Capitalism. Moore is such a hypocrite.

  • Goon

I don’t even know where to begin with something as silly as that argument, from its naivety to its ignorance of how other economic systems work, how goods and services are exchanged.

for a start you could actually read the definitions of these systems and try to explain how paying money to watch a film is only inherent to one.

  • I was referring to the economic ideal, not the movie. Hes a hypocrit because hes bashing Capitalism, yet hes earning money from ticket sales.

  • have you seen the film gigan300? If only life were as simple as your infantile logic.

  • Life can be as simple or as complicated as you want to make it.

  • Insert random Michael Moore is fat comment.

  • Goon

^lol, Itchy. But I heard Moore lost 60 pounds recently. I think he’s on that program they put Peter Jackson through. He’s got plenty to go though, if he succeeds it would be a good while before that thread inevitability passes on.

“Hes a hypocrit because hes bashing Capitalism, yet hes earning money from ticket sales.”

The exchange of money for goods and services is something that happens in socialist or left-capitalist (if you want to call it that) countries too, you know. There’s nothing hypocritical about that at all if you ask me. Moore isn’t arguing against people making money off of things, the movie’s main argument against capitalism was clearly that it wasn’t democratic enough to his liking. Example argument: in a corporation you don’t really have any say at work over anything – for all the arguments to treat these corporations as a person and give them all these freedoms, we go to work at what are essentially dictatorships for up to half of our day. The film continues to argue that by showing an alternative of other companies where the CEOs make less and there are more opportunities and better wages for other workers. At one such company a person working on the line was making 60,000 – contrast that to airline pilots in the film who were making less than 20,000 a year.

And again, he’s working within the system, so there’s a buffer against that criticism. I know people who benefit from the tax system as it currently is, who are still against it and want it reformed. is that hypocritical? Is it hypocritical to generally dislike socialism if you enjoy the benefits of the number of publicly funded services every day? Things aren’t so simple, and you can lean from one side to the other on major issues even if you sometimes benefit from things you don’t wholeheartedly endorse.

Let’s say I rake in a bunch of money at Company X, would I not be allowed to criticize that company from within for its business practices, just because that same company made me rich? How does anything ever change or improve without people fighting from within that system? Do you think the abolitionist movement didn’t include those who would have benefited from owning slaves? When Ben Franklin joined the abolitionist movement, should people have disregarded what he had to say?

I’m not saying you have to like anything Moore says whatsoever, I simply think your premise is fatally flawed. For the record, I don’t think you have to see the movie to have arguments against a number of Moore’s ideas, however by not having seen it, you’re certainly more likely to be attacking strawmen. You are definitely setting yourself up to make a fool of yourself if you’re going to attack Moore for ideas he isn’t even presenting or arguing against. A large deal of it is an appeal for accountability, and for the public to have more say in government than lobbyists for companies ‘too big to fail’. Moore acknowledges the opportunities capitalism gave him, but at the same time hates what the system does to others enough that he feels he has to also criticize it. I don’t consider Moore’s arguments to be all that complex, but it’s nowhere near simple enough to just yell ‘Commie!’ or ‘Hypocrite!’ at either. Buying a ticket to this movie is nowhere as weird to me as when people pay for Che Guevara t-shirts, that’s for sure. :D

  • joe

He actually did have a bunch of free showings, lol

Good story Sean. About time you had one to share! What’s with you guys and “rear-end” problems. I think it’s all the drive-in poutine.

  • kyriacos

Moore should try some different roles..
Maybe star in an action movie or a romantic comedy…

Just a small tangent: When it comes to Jay Leno and NBC. NBC came to Leno years ago back when it was announced that Conan would take over The Tonight Show. The story that both NBC and Leno told was that NBC called Leno in, that Conan’s contract was coming up, and they didn’t want to lose him, so they were going to give him the Tonight Show when Leno’s contract expired in 09. It wasn’t that Leno wanted to retire, but NBC forced him out. But when 09 rolled around, Leno was still the #1 late night show on TV. So NBC (thinking his popularity wouldn’t falter and that people would follow him to ten) decided to give him another show.

It’s sad because Leno is a funny guy, I’ve seen him do stand up a number of times and in the mid 90’s “The Tonight Show” was really funny. I don’t know if it’s due to censors changing, or perhaps the heads of NBC, writers leaving or whatever, but the stuff that gets put out now by Leno isn’t funny, at least not on his show (his stand up however is still very funny, maybe because there’s no censors)

  • Goon

Leno is capable of being funny, but over the years he’s put other priorities and pandering over his own true sense of humor, to the point where all that you see now is a corporate jokebox. Go out and find Bill Hicks anti-Leno material :)

  • Damndirtyape

    Damn funny podcast.

As for Moore, I can’t really comment on his new film since won’t waste my money paying to see his crap, but then again I feel the same about Tarantino, so there ya go.

  • Anyone who doesn’t understand Greg’s contribution to the show should listen to this episode from November 2006 that features “Chris” – the 3rd-host that came before him…

    Brutal. Viva la Greg!

  • Goon

My first guess was that was Chian, I don’t remember a Chris, but I haven’t heard his voice in forever now.

Listening to a few minutes of this in general, it sounds so weird to hear, comparably stilted. That’s years of experience for you though I guess.

  • PositivelyKen

Hey guys, I’ve been listening for a number of months now, and your show has quickly become one of my regular must-hears. I was at the mall on my lunch break the other day when Jay started telling his masturbation story, and it cracked me up so badly that other shoppers were staring at me like I was a crazy man. So thanks and damn you all.

  • Reed-tard

    1. Youre reffering to marked economy. If you have seen Moores movie(s) you should know what he is critisizing and not.

    Jay. Dead Snow fucking sucks!

  • Napalm

darn it! i was late with sending my junk mail.

anyways really appreciate you guys for doing 2 episodes back to back :)
