Weekly Poll Results: Best Zombie Movie

pollresultsbestzombiemovie

I don’t think anyone will be surprised to see George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead top last week’s poll, but wow… it was an extremely close race between the top 3 choices. Edgar Wright’s Shaun of the Dead and Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later just barely fell short of the #1 spot, while Romero’s original Night of the Living Dead and Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake rounded out the top 5.

I fully acknowledge that Day of the Dead should have also been on this list (as many of you have pointed out), particularly in place of Evil Dead 2 (although Evil Dead 2 did still get a fair number of votes). I guess I just thought Romero had already been fairly represented. Other than that, do you agree with the results? I’m a little disappointed that Return of the Living Dead was way down at the bottom, but then again, it’s a very solid list overall. And where would Zombieland rank in all this?

1. Dawn of the Dead (1978) — 22.9%
2. Shaun of the Dead — 20.1%
3. 28 Days Later — 19.6%
4. Night of the Living Dead (1968) — 13.5%
5. Dawn of the Dead (2004) — 8.8%
6. Evil Dead 2 — 5.8%
7. Dead Alive — 3%
8. [REC] — 2.2%
8. Return of the Living Dead — 2.2%
10. Zombie (aka Zombi 2) — 1.9%

Neither Evil Dead 2, REC, nor 28 Days Later should have been on there as there are no zombies in those movies. Kind of funny that the 3rd best zombie movie doesn’t even have zombies in it.

  • Star

Yeah, Return of the Living Dead should be much higher.

  • Maybe start a new poll for those zombie purists out there. Myself, I see nothing wrong with looping these movies together since they are essentially the same, minus the “Z” word.

  • Does anyone else like the remake of Night of the Living Dead better than the original?

  • Mike

28 Days Later is a Zombie movie, i really hate when people argue such ridiculous semantics about Zombie movies. The word Zombie has evolved, like many words do, to encompass much more than the grave climbing undead.

  • paulm

What could be more simple? Someone dies and their dead body is reanimated, through scientific or supernatural means. Compared to someone who gets sick and has a disease/virus that makes them lose control/act crazy. Now if you want to lump these movies into categories like Siege Movies, Post Apocalyptic, or whatever, fine. But you can’t just say they are “ridiculous semantics.” And since 1968, Zombies don’t have to have crawled out of a grave to be considered Zombies.

I think the 1990 remake is really good, but I like the 1968 version a bit more. I agree that Return of the Living Dead should have placed better. When I saw “Day” and “Return” in the theaters that year, I initially liked “Return” better. I even went back to see it again the same week. Now that could have been because of Trash’s cemetery dance…I was in high school, and my hormones were raging (like a virus?).

  • Brains!

  • The 1968 NotLD original is definitely better than the 1990 remake, but the remake isn’t half bad. I did like the two leads and the ‘new’ ending and the colour cinematography.

  • I have a hard time watching 1968 just because Barbara is freaking out through most of the movie. 1990 Barbara could definitely kick 1968’s Barbara’s ass. On the grand scale I would say 1968 is better, but I get more entertainment out of watching 1990.

  • paulm

I think Barbara in 1990 is much hotter.

i know i’ll probably be a bit lonely in this view, but i think that ‘shaun’ over ‘night’ and ’28 days’ is ludicrous, bizarre and puzzling

    me internet sucks

  • Marc

I think the Dawn of the Dead remake should have ranked higher. It’s one case where the remake surpasses the original.

  • FreeCajunLove

Call me a Zombie Purist, but 28 Days Later is not a zombie film. The “infected” die after 28 days due to hunger.

Simply… zombies do not die unless the brain is destroyed.

  • Reed-tard

Doesn’t matter how much you argue. Neither REC nor Evil Dead is a zombie movie! I mean, for god sakes, just put in Aliens and Predator too, wtf!=!”

  • Matt

ok freecajun… zombies are not real ok…. so we are free to interpret them however we want…..which means I say a zombie is a zombie if it is undead. 28 days rocked period

  • Noah

the list is pretty good, but i believe dawn of the dead(2004.) deserves a lot more credit. it’s an excellent zombie movie. great cast, excellent soundtrack, top-notch effects! it’s underrated only because it’s a remake. don’t get me wrong, i love the original. these guys agree with me: http://www.zombieplace.com/zombie-movies

  • chris

Rec is not a zombie film. They have rabies which makes them go crazy but those things miss out on the zombie concept. Im surprise European zombie films arent here other then the english ones. Ppl need to see the horde or deadset or even Or even pontypool
