Venom Spin-Off Gets a New Writer and Potential Director

Two pieces of Topher Grace-related news in one day?! What have we done to deserve this amazing gift? THR’s Heat Vision Blog continues to churn out the scoops, and it appears that they finally have an update today regarding Sony’s long-rumoured Venom movie that has been quietly developing in the background over the past year. After going through two scripts, one of which was written by Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the project is now getting a fresh pen in the form of Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, Pleasantville, Big).

Ross had been the most recent screenwriter working on Spider-Man 4, so I guess we can assume that the studio was happy with his work and thought it might translate well to a related property. I wonder if there will be any connection between the two films? Ross is also reportedly being considered to direct Venom, which would make it his first movie since Seabiscuit in 2003. Okay, so I kinda lied, this news doesn’t really concern Topher Grace at all, as he is not expected to be involved; the movie would likely be a “reboot” of the character and a completely separate entity from the Spider-Man series. That being said, is this really the right approach for a Venom movie, and is Gary Ross the right man to direct it? Sound off in the comments below.

All this comic book movie news is like the teacher in the Charlie Brown cartoons: wahh wahh wahh wahh wahh.

Gut reaction: This is going to be interesting.

Ross is a writer/director who knows what he’s doing, so if he has a concept I trust he’ll come up with something. At this point all we can do is speculate till we see a trailer or images and that’s a long way off. I don’t really care what happens in this movie, if it’s a good movie then it’s good and that’s all that matters.

I think they should just bring back Topher. He was good as the character. It’s a comic book movie, make up some weird explanation about why he is alive. if the movie as a whole is awesome, nobody will care that he is back.

  • When are people going to learn that spin-offs don’t work? I literally can’t think of a single successful spin-off from a successful franchise. Oh except Caravan Of Courage: The Ewok Adventure. That was frickin’ awesome. Neechawawa!

Didn´t you read it? It´s going to be a reboot so they wouldn´t have to come up with an explanation of why he´s alive. That said, I don´t want Topher back.

I said they should bring back Topher Grace. If you bring back Topher Grace to play the character then they will have to have some sort of explanation as to why his character is alive after being blown up in Spiderman 3. Hence why I said what I said. And yes, I read that they were going to reboot. I was just giving my opinion on what I’d prefer. That is all.
