Fox Searchlight Developing a Ramones Biopic

It’s been 8 years now since Joey Ramone passed away, and 5 years since Johnny Ramone died, so I suppose it’s about time someone got around to making a Ramones biopic… right? Well according to the Risky Biz Blog, Fox Searchlight is doing exactly that. The indie imprint is currently in negotiations with producer Rory Rosegarten, who owns the big screen rights to the upcoming book I Slept with Joey Ramone, written by Joey’s brother Mickey Leigh. Rosegarten also managed to get the rights to use the music of The Ramones, which is pretty key.

Fox Searchlight sounds like an ideal place for a project like this to develop as they have always been willing to take chances and have a great way of understanding and marketing to subcultures. However, I’m not so sure about this Rory Rosegarten fellow; he was an executive producer on Everybody Loves Raymond. At any rate, The Ramones have a great rags-to-riches story, and they certainly changed music in a lot of ways, but there’s potential here for the movie to have a sense of humour as well. With the right people involved, I think a Ramones biopic could be awesome. What do you think? Who would you like to see star in this (other than Vinnie Chase)?

  • Rick

here’s a movie destined to make alot of money.

  • Goon

If Martin Starr was taller he’d be the perfect Joey Ramone

  • Haha that would be amazing.

  • Captain N

I don’t understand the musicians getting biopics and the ones that are. I understand why The Ramones would get one, for sure, while I’m not a fan. Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Duane Allman, and more recently Layne Staley/Alice in Chains would all make for fantastic biopics, I’d like to see these made.

  • Jackson

I think Jason Schwartzman could be Dee Dee, he’s a spazzy little musician. Martin Star could be Joey, it’s not like actors have to be tall to play rolls, everyone in Hollywood is short. I think Emile Hirsch could fit in there somewhere too… maybe Joey?

  • Phil

This is the role Emo Phillips was born to play

  • Rick

led zepplin would be good. Or what about Bob marley? the clash? pink floyd? aerosmith? i mean i know alot of people like the ramones….but why a movie on the ramones?

  • A Bob Marley biopic is actually in the works. Not sure about some of the others.

  • Rick

wow, thats awesome. if anyone deserves a bio it’s bob marley. thanks sean, that just made my day

  • You’re welcome. Jonathan Demme was supposedly directing it but quit in the middle of the project or something.

  • Rick

huh thats interesting. do you know why he dropped out?

  • Bo Kelly

Lynyrd Skynyrd needs a movie!!!!!!Highly overlooked!!!!!
