A few months ago, Steven Soderbergh was getting ready to shoot Moneyball with Brad Pitt when the movie fell apart at the very last minute. Although there have since been reports that Aaron Sorkin would step in to rewrite the script and keep the project alive, Soderbergh isn’t dwelling on it. He has already regrouped and moved on to his next flick: an espionage-themed action-thriller called Knockout.
Soderbergh is partnering with Relativity Media for the film, and in a somewhat unorthodox deal, he will waive his upfront salary in order to retain part ownership of the film. Clearly the movie is being set up to keep the budget low, but it sounds like it will have a lot more mainstream potential than some of his experimental films. The story, which is being written by Lem Dobbs (The Limey, The Score), is said to be “in the vein of The Bourne Identity” except that it revolves around a female spy. In talks to star is MMA fighter Gina Carano, perhaps better known as Crush on American Gladiators. I don’t know about you, but I think I’ve already forgotten about Moneyball! Knockout is expected to start production in February 2010. Are you excited to see Soderbergh’s spin on a Bourne-esque action movie?
