Bryan Singer to Direct Battlestar Galactica Reboot

Well perhaps Bryan Singer won’t be returning to the X-Men franchise in the near future after all. What started yesterday as a strong rumour from Hitfix has now apparently been confirmed by both Entertainment Weekly and Variety: Bryan Singer will direct a brand new Battlestar Galactica movie for Universal. And no, this won’t have anything to do with the Sci-Fi/SyFy series either… it will be based on the original 1978 series, as originally announced back in February. Crazy, right?

Well, not as crazy as you might think. Apparently Bryan Singer was in talks to direct a Battlestar movie back in 2001, before Ron Moore took over the reins and re-imagined the show entirely. Now Singer may get a chance to embrace his own vision for the series after all, although it sounds like they might just start from scratch with a new writer. Original series creator Glen Larson is on board as a producer.

Clearly there will be many conflicting opinions over this, as loyal fans of Ron Moore will see this movie as infringing on the world he has crafted. Personally I’m still hoping they go a little campy with it… there’s no point in getting all dark and serious again. Maybe a good old fashioned space opera? I know Bryan Singer was developing a Logan’s Run remake at one point, so perhaps they can combine some of those ideas with this. What do you think, are you game for more Battlestar Galactica? If you weren’t a fan of the idea before, does Bryan Singer’s involvement change your mind?

  • Wa? Is this a joke?

I wouldn’t mind a less serious Battlestar movie, but are people going to be confused as to whether or not this connects with the Sci-Fi series? Cuz, people are really dumb.

  • Ian

The key aspect of BSG in both series was this whole hog human annihilation. That’s a dark subject so if they got cheesy I don’t know how that will work? And with Synger I don’t think cheesy will happen so I’ll just hope for a good looking sci-fi movie.

  • Big Hungry

All I have to say is the most recent show was an awesome ride and I do not see Singer making it better or on par with it. Oh and I have one more thing to say… WHY? and I would rather a logan’s run remake over this.

  • If this actually gets made there will be inevitable confusion and comparisons to the re-imagined series, especially this soon after the end of the series. It will be one big cluster-frak.

I’m also pretty sure that Richard Hatch would play a character in this.

  • Nate

Well, when will this come out, 2011 at the earliest? I’ll be ready for more BSG in two years. Maybe by then my preconceived notions for what the characters should be will be gone and I can accept Singer’s take on the whole thing.

    Nice pic.

The re-imagining was great, but the original show was ultimately a cheap cash-in on the success of Star Wars and was a campy mess. Bryan Singer trying to do anything with it souds like a very bad idea.

Superman was really weak so I am not very excited about this

  • Soop27

    Truly unnecessary.

  • MoriaOrc

This is lame. There are so many stories and worlds that could be explored instead of this again.

  • Evillusion

    I agree with Shawn… cluster-frak indeed.

Bryan Singer needs to find some NEW MATERIAL and quit re-doing other ppls work time and again.

  • Big Hungry

All this talk about reboots makes me want to see a movie about reboots.

  • Jason_Miami

Finally, we’ll get a version of Battlestar Galactica with skin-tight leather.

I’m all over this! It will be great to finally see Singer’s vision for Galactica brought to life. Anyone who gets confused by it doesn’t deserve to sit in a movie seat and watch a film.
