Well perhaps Bryan Singer won’t be returning to the X-Men franchise in the near future after all. What started yesterday as a strong rumour from Hitfix has now apparently been confirmed by both Entertainment Weekly and Variety: Bryan Singer will direct a brand new Battlestar Galactica movie for Universal. And no, this won’t have anything to do with the Sci-Fi/SyFy series either… it will be based on the original 1978 series, as originally announced back in February. Crazy, right?
Well, not as crazy as you might think. Apparently Bryan Singer was in talks to direct a Battlestar movie back in 2001, before Ron Moore took over the reins and re-imagined the show entirely. Now Singer may get a chance to embrace his own vision for the series after all, although it sounds like they might just start from scratch with a new writer. Original series creator Glen Larson is on board as a producer.
Clearly there will be many conflicting opinions over this, as loyal fans of Ron Moore will see this movie as infringing on the world he has crafted. Personally I’m still hoping they go a little campy with it… there’s no point in getting all dark and serious again. Maybe a good old fashioned space opera? I know Bryan Singer was developing a Logan’s Run remake at one point, so perhaps they can combine some of those ideas with this. What do you think, are you game for more Battlestar Galactica? If you weren’t a fan of the idea before, does Bryan Singer’s involvement change your mind?
