This Week on DVD: Watchmen, Coraline, Pontypool

dvdjuly21_09

Finally after weeks of lacklustre DVD releases, we’ve got a decent assortment of must-buy discs to gorge on including Zack Snyder’s Watchmen (both the theatrical version and the director’s cut) and the beautiful stop-motion animated Coraline. There are also some interesting indie releases this week including the superhero comedy Super Capers, the surreal Zach Galifianakis flick Visioneers, and Bruce McDonald’s cerebral take on the zombie genre Pontypool (unfortunately, only available in Canada at the moment). In terms of TV, we’ve got the second and final season of Pushing Daisies, the final season of Prison Break, and all three seasons of the cult British comedy The Mighty Boosh. Is that enough for you? What will you be picking up this week?

  • Matt Keith

Can’t wait to see The “Watchmen” Director’s cut.

  • Goon

    missing from the list

This American Life – season 2

  • I find it ironic that the Canada only release of Pontypool doesn’t have bilingual packaging.

  • Goon

asking on this thread for no reason: Is Cantankerous’ new ep coming out before or after the new podcast?

  • Goon

Jay, neither does Fubar or Hard Core Logo :P

a quick glance shows most times though yes they are bilingual – It’s All Gone Pete Tong, Waydowntown, Kitchen Party, to name a few…

Whenever Beauty Day is released, give it a French title and packaging, but make it all a joke, like its describing a completely different movie, and the French title would translate to something like “Chocolate Retard on Fire”

  • Dave

the French title would translate to something like “Chocolate Retard on Fire”

I would support this. I would support this monetarily. Cash money.

  • Cantankerous probably won’t be edited until the end of the week at least. We have Film Junk tonight and Movie Club tomorrow and I’ve still got like 3 reviews to write.

  • Ummm

How can i get pictures when i comment here? I can’t seem to find the register button, hehe

  • The site currently uses Gravatars. Just sign up for an account at Gravatar.com, upload an image and then use the same e-mail address when posting here… your picture should show up automatically.

  • When the hell will I be able to see Pontypool stateside??

  • If I order Pontypool from amazon.ca will it play in my dvd player? Both region 1 right?

  • I believe Pontypool is currently available through IFC on demand or something like that in the U.S. Not sure when it will be released on DVD, but Canada is indeed Region 1.
