Will Smith and Francis Lawrence Reteaming for The City That Sailed?

Say what you will about I Am Legend, but I enjoyed the movie in spite of its blockbuster pedigree. The CG may have been a bit sketchy in parts, but I still thought the movie was suspenseful, eerie and featured a strong central performance from Will Smith. We’ve been hearing for a while now that director Francis Lawrence may be looking to revisit similar territory, whether it be through a possible I Am Legend prequel, or an adaptation of the non-fiction book The World Without Us. This week, however, there is yet another project that he is reportedly interested in tackling, and while it’s not quite an end-of-the-world scenario, it may very well star Will Smith.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lawrence will be developing and possibly directing a “fantastical drama” called The City That Sailed about the young daughter of a New York street magician who causes Manhattan to break away from North America and drift across the ocean. Sounds like something that might be a little more suited for Pixar, but nonetheless, the fact that the script was written by Andrew Niccol (Gattaca, Lord of War, The Truman Show) has me intrigued. The project is being produced by Will Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment, but Smith has not officially signed on as of yet. In fact, he still hasn’t chosen any project to follow last year’s Seven Pounds. Either way, with the number of projects both he and Lawrence are juggling, it sounds like that I Am Legend prequel won’t be happening anytime soon.
