New Director Boards Barbarella Remake

One of the many projects that Robert Rodriguez was attached to direct over the past year or two is the remake of the ’60s sci-fi sex romp Barbarella, but it fell apart when Universal got cold feet due to budgetary, casting and location concerns. Now it looks like the project is reforming again under the guidance of Dino De Laurentiis, who apparently has a new director lined up to take over the reins.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Robert Luketic is the man that will replace Rodriguez on this “big intergalactic adventure with a sexy twist”. Luketic previously directed the films Monster-in-Law, Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!, Legally Blonde and more recently 21 and The Ugly Truth. Clearly he knows a bit about romantic comedies, but is that really the sensibility we need for Barbarella? Seems like a terrible choice to me, but who knows, maybe he’ll surprise us. After all, he did direct a short film called Titsiana Booberini. No word yet on who might sign on to fill Jane Fonda’s space suit.

The only reason I would have wanted to see this film is to see Rose McGowan in that outfit, but having Rodriguez directed would have been nice…..oh well.
