I’m so confused. Last week it was announced that Keanu Reeves had signed on to star in a modern retelling of Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, to be directed by Nicolas Winding Refn. At the time it was noted that Guillermo Del Toro is also planning his own version of the story for the big screen. Now today comes an announcement about yet ANOTHER Jekyll and Hyde movie in the works from director Abel Ferrara (Bad Lieutenant).

In this case, it will be not one actor but two that take on the lead role, with Forest Whitaker and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson attached to star. Says producer Luc Roeg, “The combination of such formidable talent in front of and behind the camera will turn this wonderful gothic story into a modern classic for a whole new generation.” Whitaker and 50 Cent were both in the news not too long ago when 50 Cent replaced Whitaker in Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables, only to then be replaced by Terry Crews soon after bloggers started reacting negatively to the choice. I do think 50 Cent gets a bit of a bad rap (pun intended) when it comes to his acting career. I’ve only seen him in Get Rich or Die Tryin’, and although I didn’t really like the movie, I thought he showed a bit of promise. The real question here is, who will play Jekyll and who will play Hyde? Either way, the race is on and with Ferrara’s version shooting later this summer, it may have the inside track on being the first of the Jekyll and Hyde flicks to hit theatres.
