He-Man Movie Gets a New Writer

Has Hollywood already given up on Justin Marks? The mystery man who was hired to write so many geek-oriented screenplays over the past year (Voltron, Hack/Slash, Super Max, Shadow of the Colossus) is about to have one of his most heavily-hyped scripts rewritten. According to The Hollywood Reporter, rookie screenwriter Evan Daugherty has been hired by Warner Brothers to craft a new take on Grayskull, the He-Man feature film that is being directed by John Stevenson (Kung Fu Panda).
To be fair, rewrites happen all the time. Justin Marks’s script existed before Stevenson came on board, and he probably has a different vision for the film. I’m sure it has nothing to do with the fact that Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (the only Marks-penned film to hit the big screen thus far) was a total box office disaster! It is kind of ironic though that the job has been handed to Daugherty, who is just as unproven as Marks. Thus far he has only written an unproduced thriller called Shrapnel, and a short indie comedy called Rusty Forkblade (which he also directed).
Grayskull will center on Adam, a soldier who stumbles upon the magical world of Eternia where Skeletor is waging a war with his “technological army”. Sounds like they’re going to take some liberties with the story, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they avoid using the name He-Man altogether. But can it possibly top the 1987 Masters of the Universe movie starring Dolph Lundgren??
