I wasn’t a big fan of Crank: High Voltage, but I have to admit that it did open my mind to the visual style of writer/directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor. They seem to have a pretty unique take on action movies, creating surreal worlds with a chaotic, mixed media aesthetic. Their upcoming film Gamer appears to be the next logical evolution of the process in that they’ve literally created a live action video game on screen.
Formerly titled Game and then Citizen Game, Gamer takes place in a world where prisoners are forced to become pawns in a massively multiplayer online video game called Slayers. Gerard Butler is one of these pawns, while Michael C. Hall is the creator of the game. Although the visuals don’t look quite as crazy as the Crank films, I’m pretty curious to see what they’ve got in store this time around. The premise could come across as a bit cheesy though, depending on how smart the script is, and the trailer isn’t very reassuring in that regard. Still, I’m definitely willing to give this a chance when it hits theatres on September 4th. Check out the trailer below and see what you think. They’ve also one of those nifty animated posters for the film over at UGO.
