This Week on DVD: JCVD, Bride Wars, Martyrs

dvdapr28_09

If you’re planning on doing some DVD shopping this week, you’re essentially looking at some mediocre theatrical releases from January and a handful of genre flicks to choose from. In addition to Bride Wars and Hotel for Dogs, there is the A Tale of Two Sisters remake The Uninvited, the controversial Martyrs, direct-to-DVD MMA action flick Never Surrender, plus the festival favourite JCVD starring (you guessed it!) Jean Claude Van-Damme. Also hitting stores today is the animated feature Jetsons: The Movie, the first two volumes of the ’90s X-Men animated series, and on Blu-ray, Season 1 of Star Trek: The Original Series. See anything worth picking up?

  • I watched JCVD on BD about 2 months ago…whut?

  • Hmm, I think it was a Blockbuster exclusive.

In the Realm of Senses on bluray just shipped for me

  • blackmothra, would it be presumptuous of me to think that your newfound interest in Star Trek is due to the upcoming JJ Abrams’ Star Trek movie? Please do come back and give us your thoughts. I think to the casual viewer, Star Trek is no different than Lost in Space. I’m wondering if Trekkies like myself are deluding ourselves and reading into the episodes more than they deserve. Or maybe there is something to Star Trek that “intelligent” people (modesty aside) pick up on. I can guarantee that someone who “knows” Star Trek will enjoy the new movie more, so maybe you should have a marathon with the first season and then go see the movie.

That Star Trek blu-ray seems really tempting, and the current price for it is $65 at Amazon and Best Buy.

I remember when the original series was first released on DVD, they came with only 2 episodes per volume at $20 each!

  • rob, I remember when the VHS videos of Star Trek came out at $25 an episode. I bought one.

Then Columbia House had two episodes on a VHS tape for $30. What a bargain! So I subscribed. Worst investment I ever made.

My excuse is that I never thought I would make it past 30 years of age. Just my luck.

just watched “the man trap” .. wow, im super excited to see the rest .. ive had an intrest in star trek for awhile .. my favorite tv show is the adam west batman series, and ive been looking for something to compare, and i think ive found it .. wonderful stuff, so far anyway

  • Glad you enjoyed “The Man Trap.” It was chosen as the first episode to be aired because there was a monster and there were phasers. Unfortunately, it’s not representative of the Star Trek philosophy, because they kill the monster without trying to reason with it. (Oops. Sorry if I spoiled that episode for anyone.) Contrast this episode with a later episode, “The Devil in the Dark.” (Oh, I believe you’ll need to wait for the second season set for that episode.)

  • Reed does this mean you’re finally ready to give us your list of Top 10 Star Trek Episodes for Newbies?

  • blackmothra
