Despite the lack of quality titles in theatres this weekend, the overall box office numbers were very strong for this time of the year. Obsessed did surprisingly well, with the star power of Beyonce helping to bring in over $28 million in its opening weekend. 17 Again fell to the #2 spot, just barely edging past the #3 film for the weekend, Fighting. The Soloist had a pretty disappointing performance, earning just $9.7 million despite having Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr. in it. Perhaps the general public saw right through the Oscar bait in this case, although reviews have actually been alright (61% on Rotten Tomatoes). Earth made $8.5 million, a decent amount for a nature doc but probably not as much as Disney was hoping for. Either way, most of these movies are likely to get left in the dust next weekend when X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past hit theatres.
