Wolverine Reshoots Explained: Fox Adding Multiple Endings

wolverineendings

Earlier this week there were reports about a top secret Wolverine reshoot happening on the Fox studio lot, mere days before the movie was scheduled to be released in theatres. Although the purpose was being kept under wraps, it seemed to be related to the leaked workprint and a last minute directive to add new footage to the final cut. Well, thanks to Alex over at FirstShowing.net we can now say with some certainty that the reshoots were actually held to create multiple endings for the film — that is, a variety of post-credit stingers.

Director Gavin Hood said that Fox had a tradition of hiding “easter eggs” in their films (the hidden scene at the end of X-Men: The Last Stand, for example), and although he didn’t say how many different endings there would be, at least one of them is related to the Deadpool character. Apparently Fox is hoping that fanboys will go see the movie multiple times in order to see each of the different stingers after the credits. Man… I can barely be bothered to stay until after the credits the first time around! Hood also explained that the leaked workprint had “400 unfinished visual effects shots… no score, unfinished sound mixing, and unfinished coloring”, but failed to mention any other actual missing scenes. Clearly these additional endings are intended to ensure that people will pay to see the movie, but is it too little too late? Do you plan on seeing Wolverine multiple times? Will multiple endings save Wolverine from box office disaster?

Post credit stingers are tackey bullshit. I think it can be taken as a rule of thumb that no movie with a post-credit stinger has ever been truely great, I can’t ever imagine something with a post-credit stinger ever winning an Oscar, for example.

  • Goon

I dont think theres any problem adding a ‘stinger’ to a popcorn movie or comedy. Probably the artiest movie I know with one is Triplets of Belleville, but people may not count it because its animated.

I think the best one to date though is in the Dawn of the Dead remake, where they hit the island only to find it overrun by zombies.

  • good for them…they got burned by a disgruntle employee leaking a print so they came up with a creative response to help their cause. they should have like 15 different stingers and make it the biggest stinger effort ever.

  • mrbenning

Eh, I only really care about stingers if they add something to the movie. The Dawn of the Dead remake did that.

The Marvel stingers, thus far, have been worthless, save for possibly generating excitement for a movie 3 years down the line.

I don’t know I would the “Iron Man” one was pretty good, even though I personally didn’t stay to watch it! Although all those “stingers” (and this is the first I’ve ever heard of that term used) really only tease you for new movies coming. Like the X-Men was to tease you that the Prof would be coming back, but is there going to be another movie? Who knows. With DVD nowadays, they’ll put all that stuff on there anyway, and the DVD comes out pretty fast. I’d say wait for the DVD which ought to be out by early fall maybe?

  • I really didn’t feel the leak would hurt the film financially. But it’s good that they are making sure of that.

But what happens of someone leaks all the stingers onto the internet before the film comes out? ;)

  • Then everyone at Fox will turn into Wolverine in rage haha!

  • Matt

In the picture above, are their hands supposed to be tied behind the poles? Because Liev’s hands are clearly not tied. Is that a shot from the movie or one of the stingers? Personally, they can put as many endings as they want to in there, I’m not going to see it. This movie looked like popcorn garbage fluff from the beginnig. And I’m not wasting any more time on it.

“Clearly these additional endings are intended to ensure that people will pay to see the movie, but is it too little too late?”

    I don’t know.

“Do you plan on seeing Wolverine multiple times?”

    No, I don’t. Just one.

“Will multiple endings save Wolverine from box office disaster?”

It will not be a box office disaster. It will be a hit.

  • WH

“Will multiple endings save Wolverine from being a giant turd?”
Not unless one of them features Tom Rothman being executed like the above production photo.

  • Honestly I liked it better as a leak. I’m extending my disbelief that there are nearly immortal super human mutants… I don’t need or want you to spend that time to hide the strings and cgi light flares off of the claws. Be honest we can all tell it’s fake because of the nature of what it is… comic fans like a little graphic quality to their art… why screw it up to try and fool the eye when the mind already accepts what’s going on.

Now they’ll go and reshoot alt endings… maybe one where wolverine doesn’t become an x-man at all.. and another where he dies… then one where we find out the whole frickin thing was a dream…. yeah that will win fans and make them want to go to see it again… right.

I have seen the leaked print thanks to a friend and I had planned to see it at the theatre at least once if not multiple times even after having seen it for free. I personally do not believe the leaked print will hurt the film as much as movie execs fear (they alwasy over fear everything like music execs) but anyone who did see the leaked print for free should buy a ticket to the film if for no other eason then to help counter the movie execs claims that tighter control/security is needed over file sharing.

Apprently, no one saw the Post Credit scenes, and are just talking trash about them. 1 Post credit scene shows Deadpool being done right. He was screwed over, as far as comic-to-movie char. He never broke the 4th wall in the movie, untill one of the post credit shots, were it shows his own hands grabing for his head, to reattach it, then puting his finger over his…or at least were his lips should be, and saying(to the aduince) “Shhh” This is obviously opening a door for a Deadpool spin off. But dont expect it under its own title, there are going to end up tittleing it “X-Men: Deadpool”

What about reports of an ending where ryan reynolds comes out and sees “deadpool” and asks him “who are you?” I’m not kidding. A friend of mine says he saw that ending when he went to see the movie. But I haven’t seen a report about that ending.
