With the last weekend in April generally regarded as one of the worst release dates in the calendar year, you know you’re not going to be getting a ton of gold hitting theatres today. Still, there are a handful of major releases that are being shoved out the door including the MMA flick Fighting starring Channing Tatum, the thriller Obsessed starring Ali Larter and Beyonce, and the delayed drama The Soloist starring Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr. Disney’s Earth also hit theatres on Wednesday. In select theatres we have the Bret Easton Ellis adaptation The Informers (which got terrible reviews at Sundance), the documentary Tyson, and the Italian political biopic Il Divo. Are you planning on seeing anything this weekend?

  • I’m checking out Obsessed, which is funny considering I have yet to see Observe and Report, Crank 2, Fast and Furious, Dragonball: Evolution and just about every other movie currently in the theatres. Knockdown, drag out cat fights rule.

And is Fighting an MMA film? I thought it was straight-up street fighting. You’re making it so that I don’t want to see it anymore, Sean.

  • You could be right about Fighting… it is definitely underground street fighting, and I don’t know if the main character uses MMA. Still, there’s this snippet in the synopsis:

“As Shawn’s manager, Harvey introduces him to the corrupt bare-knuckle circuit, where rich men bet on disposable pawns. Almost overnight, he becomes a star brawler, taking down professional boxers, mixed martial arts champs and ultimate fighters in a series of staggeringly intense bouts.”

Fighting is basically going to be what everyone initially dismissed Fight Club of being.

  • The movie is not at all worth watching.

  • Funny and entertaining film. Enjoyed it.
