Weekly Poll Results: Best Rock Doc

pollresultsrockdoc

Documentaries about bands may seem to be pretty niche films (which I suppose explains why there was a lot less participation in this poll than in previous weeks), but when you can find a story that relates to viewers outside of their fanbase, then you know you’ve got something special on your hands. Metallica’s popularity probably helped push Metallica: Some Kind of Monster to #1 on last week’s poll about rockumentaries, but the movie certainly doesn’t make them out to be heroes. Similarly, the #2 and #3 movies Gimme Shelter and Dig! have great stories to them beyond the music. I’m a little disappointed that Shut Up & Sing was all the way down at #9 since it’s also a great film, but I know a lot of people don’t like The Dixie Chicks. Do you agree with the poll results? Will you watch a musical documentary even if you’re not a fan of the band being featured?

1. Metallica: Some Kind of Monster — 22.4%
2. Gimme Shelter — 19.6%
3. Dig! — 14%
4. The Last Waltz — 11.2%
5. Woodstock — 9.3%
6. Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey — 8.4%
7. Don’t Look Back — 6.5%
8. Heavy Metal Parking Lot — 4.7%
9. Shut Up & Sing — 2.8%
10. Festival Express — 0.9%

  • I don’t know why I didn’t vote, I love Gimme Shelter.

  • Richard

although not necessarily a “rock doc” one of my favorite music documentaries is “the devil and daniel johnston” it’s a pretty amazing story.

  • Phil G

The only thing SOME KIND OF MONSTER did was make me really hate this band, especially James Hetfield. This guy comes off as the biggest self centered, pompous, uber douche on the planet.

The best scene, however, was when Lars is playing some music for his father, clearly wanting his approval, and his father tells him he needs to rethink what they are doing.

  • The reason I loved and voted for Some Kind of Monster was because of how it made every one of them seem like total pussies! The scene between Lars and Dave Mustain was priceless girl on girl crying action.

I did get excited when they brought in Robert Trujillo, who is way too awesome for that band. They improved themselves ten-fold by offering him a job.
