Jason Statham Is The Mechanic

Word on the street is that Jason Statham is set to step into some mighty big shoes with a remake of the Charles Bronson action film The Mechanic. The original dealt with a hitman who takes on an apprentice, only to have his pupil turn on him. Dependent upon whether or not they keep the basic plot, I wonder who they will cast opposite Statham. That could make or break it for me.

I’m an avowed fan of Jason Statham, even if I don’t enjoy all or even most of his movies. I like the very idea that someone is out there bringing back disposable action films, filling a need that hasn’t been met since the early 90s. But is Jason Statham a worthy successor to Charles Bronson, and if not, who is?

    I applaud this statement. This is something many haters need to realize. Sure, I love the sci-fi/fantasy/superhero action films we have in the nils; but I miss ones set in real life. Can’t wait for The Expendables…I’ll take some HGH before the screening and start hulking.

    This is fantastic news! That’s a really awesome Charles Bronson flick, and a remake might actually get people who’d never heard of it to check out the original.
    Man, Statham really is almost single-handedly keeping the action genre alive it seems. Although I will say he seems too young for the part. Charles Bronson’s character was an old-timer professional, who was on the tail-end of his career and decided to try and train an apprentice before it was too late. However, even though he can never match Bronson’s awesomeness, I’m really interested in his take on the character.

  • While I’m sure he’ll take the title role, I did consider the thought that Statham could be the pupil. After all, Stallone had been looking to star in this remake recently, and if things are going well between the two of them on The Expendables, maybe they could team-up again in The Mechanic.

    Wintle – As for your suggestion of Statham as the student, while him and sly going after each-other would be cool, I think that’s a bad idea, as Statham is too old and tough and comes with a lot of baggage. You instantly see him as this bad-ass, and the point should be that he’s untrained and needs to learn the skills of the trade. I think ideally, you’d want some younger, not very recognizable actor to play the apprentice.

    I think that Jason should play the teacher…there shoud be a girl that plays the apprentice…i can’t wait for this show, anything with Jason i know will be awesome!!! I just hope this time there is a happy ending…Jason lives. If the apprentice is a girl, hopefully they fall in love!!
