Sofia Coppola to Direct Somewhere Starring Stephen Dorff

I won’t lie… I’m pretty freakin’ excited to finally see an announcement about a new Sofia Coppola film in the works. It appears that after the lukewarm reception given to Marie Antoinette back in 2006, she has decided to return to a scenario similar to that of her massive indie hit Lost in Translation — you know, the one that made Scarlett Johansson a star. It also finds her reteaming with Focus Features. The new project is called Somewhere and once again it will take place primarily at a hotel, only this time in Los Angeles at the Chateau Marmont.
The movie will star Stephen Dorff (Blade, Cecil B. DeMented) as a “bad boy actor stumbling through a life of excess” who is forced to sober up when he receives a visit from his 11-year-old daughter (Elle Fanning). Described only as “an intimate story set in contemporary Los Angeles”, it will be both written and directed by Sofia, produced by brother Roman, and executive produced by their father Francis Ford Coppola through his American Zoetrope studio. The movie goes before cameras throughout June and July in both L.A. and Italy. Dorff is an interesting choice for the lead, especially since he hasn’t really done anything of note in quite a while. Are you looking forward to this film? Do you see it as a return to form for Coppola, or merely a sign of retreating to her past success?
