Is Treehouse Gang The Next Best Thing to a Goonies Sequel?

Fans of Richard Donner’s ’80s adventure flick The Goonies have been waiting for decades to hear something official about a sequel, but for one reason or another, it never seems to happen. Last we heard there was a script being developed, but alas nothing more has come of it since then. Well, if you’re getting tired of waiting, the good news is someone has decided to write their own version of a Goonies sequel instead, and now it appears to be moving forward at Warner Brothers.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kent Alterman has signed on to direct a movie called Treehouse Gang, based on a spec script by Timothy Dowling (Role Models). The story revolves around six friends in their late-twenties who get together for “a treasure hunt that echoes the hunts of their youth, in the process exploring longtime friendships and grudges”. Comparisons to The Goonies are running rampant right now, and although it might just be a lame way to package and sell the movie, I have to admit that a lot of times I’d much rather see a movie that channels the spirit of a beloved classic rather than a direct sequel or remake. The only thing that worries me about this project is the fact that Kent Alterman most recently directed the Will Ferrell dud Semi-Pro. Still, with a strong script and solid cast, this could be pretty amazing. Thoughts?
