Fox News Columnist Fired for Reviewing Leaked Wolverine Workprint

wolverinereviewerfired

Last week, after the workprint of X-Men Origins: Wolverine had leaked online, most of the major movie sites reported on the happening, but very few felt it appropriate to download and post a review of the unfinished movie. So imagine the shock and horror that must have been felt throughout the top brass at Fox when they discovered that one of their own, Fox News gossip writer Roger Friedman, had done exactly that! Apparently he thought it would be okay to write about the movie since he had only good things to say about it. He thought wrong.

Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood Daily reports that News Corp has since fired Friedman, removed his post and released the following statement:

“Roger Friedman’s views in no way reflect the views of News Corporation. We, along with 20th Century Fox Film Corporation, have been a consistent leader in the fight against piracy and have zero tolerance for any action that encourages and promotes piracy. When we advised Fox News of the facts they took immediate action, removed the post, and promptly terminated Mr. Friedman.”

And… is anyone surprised to hear this? I’m not quite sure what Friedman was thinking, but it seems to me that he either wanted to lose his job, or is just so completely out to lunch that he didn’t deserve to be working in the entertainment industry anyway. Not only did he review an unfinished version of the movie, but he even talked about how easy it was to obtain. I guess this might have been a more interesting story if Friedman was intentionally “raging against the machine”, but in this case I think it’s pretty clear that the guy is just clueless.

How do you spell Roger Friedman? M.O.R.O.N

Moron is also the word to use on people who make their final judgment on the film based on this work print.

  • Seems to me he was a movie reviewer reviewing a highly anticipated movie that was leaked on the internet.

    … Am I missing something?

Maybe he should have had company loyalty, but you could also make an argument that he is a “journalist” thus only bound by a quest for unadulterated “truth.”

Of course journalism doesn’t exist anymore and a movie reviewer has never been traditionally thought of as a journalist but I still think it odd he was fired over this… Doesn’t he have editors, bossess etc??? Somebody must have green-lit his review, right?

He was reviewing an unfinished work print that shouldn’t have been out there in the first place. Plus he was basically condoning illegal downloading of a film his parent company produced. It isn’t strange that he got the boot. If they are trying to discourage downloading then having one of their own downloading a summer block buster a whole month before it is released and telling everyone how easy it was is a kick in the face.

Hilarious. Fox News = Clueless. Period.

  • Shut-Up Ed

His job is to report on movies. Sounds like a hot scoop. I would have given him a promotion. He didn’t leak it. he didn’t tell other people where to find it. Didn’t endorse anyone downloading it. Didn’t priase the leakers in any way. Gave the leak a very positive review.

Hell, first thing I did when I heard about the leak was find a review for it. Found his. Great job as far as I’m concerned.

    Nuno – Grow up.

  • Shut-Up Ed, I couldn’t help but notice your comments on last week’s Open Forum Friday discussion:

“I’m not sure how anyone can make a serious argument that is ethical to watch pirated movies.”

“Look, NOBODY wants to pay $10 for a movie that will probably suck but pirating movies is stealing, plain and simple. The hundreds of workers and investors (and even actors) that create these movies do it to make a profit, it is a service. Not paying for that service is stealing.”

Are you saying it’s not stealing because he is an entertainment writer?

I should also note that his job is to report on *finished* movies, not ones missing half of the special effects. FYI: he did seem to endorse downloading it, and talked about how easy it was and how he might also download I Love You, Man next because he had been meaning to see it.

  • Shut-Up Ed is sick of “nazi-pedophile protaginists and American Military antagonists”, so it comes to nobody’s surprise that he will defend FOX News.

  • Shut-Up Ed

    Sean,

He didn’t get fired for downloading and watching the pirated movie, he got fired for writing a review of it. He got fired for doing his job. I think that’s kind of fucked up. Apparently I am in the minority.

Is there an honor code out there amongst movie reviewers that says, “Thou must watcheth only films with ALL completed special effects!!! Woe unto you who watcheth films before they be released (like 95% of all Academy Award winning films!!!)”

    It’s ricockulous.

  • Shut-Up Ed

    Henrik,

    1) I really have no clue what that is supposed to mean… Are you saying FOX should be offended if another news organization is attracting the nazi-pedophile target market?

    2) I think I am attacking FOX here, not defending it. FOX fired the guy. I’m saying they should not have.

    3) Are you a nazi pedophile? I’ve always imagined that they are probably all named “Henrik.”

  • “Is there an honor code out there amongst movie reviewers that says, “Thou must watcheth only films with ALL completed special effects!!!”

    Yes.

  • Shut-Up Ed

    oh… well, ok then.

    Good talk.

  • I am not a nazi pedophile, but I think FOX News at this point in time is doing more bad than all the nazis and pedophiles in the world.

  • “I think FOX News at this point in time is doing more bad than all the nazis and pedophiles in the world.”

I think concentration camp survivors and kids whose lives have been completely ruined would think differently. Let’s get some perspective here.

  • Yeah Henrik… that might be in the running for most ridiculous thing ever typed on the internet…

    Take your meds.

  • “I think concentration camp survivors and kids whose lives have been completely ruined would think differently.”

I agree. Luckily, they are not a major percentage of the worlds population. FOX News is not worse, but they have a bigger impact, and that factors into the equation.

  • To be honest though, my only experience with FOX News is Bill O’Reilly clips provided by Andrew James from Rowthree.com, and The Daily Show. So what I know of FOX News is that they produce content like “THE METAL THAT YOU’RE NOT GETTING ENOUGH OF, AND WHY IT MIGHT KILL YOU – RIGHT AFTER THIS”.
