Thrill Me! Night Of The Creeps To Be Released On DVD

Fred Dekker directed only two movies during the ’80s, The Monster Squad and Night of the Creeps. While neither did particularly well at the box office, these two films were the unlikely beneficiaries of the video revolution, being passed around among horror junkies and subsequently attaining cult status. But despite the boost they received from the rise of VHS, DVD wasn’t as forgiving. The Monster Squad regularly topped many film fans’ lists of neglected films until its release two years ago. Now the prophecy will finally be fulfilled and Night of the Creeps will finally get its due with a special edition to be released near Halloween.

Night of the Creeps is a throwback to ’50s sci-fi creature features, with parasitic alien slugs landing on Earth and taking over the puny minds of the students at a local college. I rewatched Night of the Creeps not long ago, and while it didn’t hold up as well as previous viewings years ago, it was still worth it for Tom Atkins’ portrayal of Detective Ray Cameron alone, quite possibly that titan’s greatest role. Has anyone else been yearning for this companion to The Monster Squad? And if Night Of The Creeps is hitting DVD, what else is left to release?

Cool! I’ve been waiting for this ever since Jay listed it in his Best Funny Horror Movies list.

Well Dekker did direct Robocop 3 so maybe a directors cut of that? I wouldn’t mind though hearing a commentary for it where he spills all the dirty details that went in to that horrible fucking film.

The kid from European Vacation (Rusty) is great in this. I’ve never seen anyone, let alone a “professional” actor, look more uncomfortable in his own skin…

    Whatever happened to him?

Success has not shined upon most of the actors in this film, David Paymer is the most known in the mainstream as a character actor and he’s only in the movie for less than five minutes. Tom Atkins however is a legend. The rest, not so much.
The girl in the picture Suzanne Snyder, did some work in some cult films, Return of the Living Dead 2 Killer Clowns from Outer space and Weird Science.

2 flicks I’ve yet to see on DVD: 1. Matinee. Great John Goodman flick directed by Joe Dante. 2. Memoirs of the Invisible Man – a Chevy Chase vehicle directed by John Carpenter. Both guilty pleasures that I would love to have on DVD.

  • swarez

And you can since they are both out on DVD.

  • Shut-Up Ed

I said, “whatever happened to him?”

  • swarez

    IMDB is a great tool.

  • Phil

Phantasm 2, dammit! Why hasn’t Universal put this out on dvd? Or simply sell the rights to Anchor Bay who already has released the rest of the movies in the franchise?

  • swarez

    Pick up the UK release.

  • Swarez, the Dear Abby of cult films.
