Richard Linklater Kinda Sorta Working on Dazed and Confused Sequel

It’s kind of funny that with all the remakes floating around out there nowadays, we seem to have forgotten that the term “sequel” used to be just as despised. How did it come to be that sequels are now seen as a breath of fresh air rather than a shameless cash grab? Weird.

One person who managed to pull off a sequel in a way that was still acceptable to critics was Richard Linklater, who revisited his 1995 film Before Sunrise with the unexpected follow-up Before Sunset. Last year there was also talk of a sequel to School of Rock, but before he gets to that, it looks like he may be returning to his coming-of-age ’70s period piece Dazed and Confused as well (albeit somewhat indirectly).

According to a scooper for CHUD, who was at a screening of Dazed and Confused in Austin, Texas this past week, Linklater revealed during the Q&A that he would be shooting a movie this summer in Austin that revolves around “the first weekend of college in 1980″. It won’t have any of the same characters, but he did describe it as a “spiritual sequel” to Dazed and Confused. Strangely, this sounds pretty similar to Greg Mottola’s Adventureland, which is also a coming-of-age story about college students in the ’80s, although Adventureland takes place during the summer break (I’ll have a review later this week). What do you think about Linklater doing a spiritual successor to Dazed and Confused? Would you rather see School of Rock 2 first?
