Film Junk Poll: What is the Best Haunted House Movie?

pollhauntedhouse

There’s no question that when it comes to horror, haunted houses are one of the oldest and most chilling subjects for a ghost story. This weekend Lionsgate will release another entry into this subgenre, The Haunting in Connecticut, and while it remains to be seen whether or not it will be particularly memorable, I thought it would be a good time to look at some of the films it should be aspiring toward. As always, I’ve selected 10 options for the poll, but there are many others worth discussing. Cast your vote and then tell us more about your favourite haunted house flicks in the comments below.

this poll should just be Poltergeist and the Shining…except The Shining isn’t a “house”…Poltergeist wins.

My vote isn’t on this list – Guillermo del Toro’s “THe Devil’s Backbone”

Where is Vincent Price’s House on Haunted Hill

    Where’s Alien?

  • I think “The Haunting” is the one which does the most with the least. “The Innocents” is also very good. “The Shining” is good, but overrated. “Poltergeist” is O.K. but lacks the beautiful simplicity of those earlier films. “The Orphanage” is great and has some wonderful scares. I’d put that even second with “The Innocents”. I loved “The Sixth Sense” but it isn’t really about a house as such. “The Others” was boring. I was more scared by a talk show appearance by the couple who claimed the Amityville haunting had actually happened to them (before it was exposed as a hoax) than by the movie. The other two I haven’t seen.

I love “The House on Haunted Hill”, being a huge fan of William Castle, but SPOILER, SPOILER, SPOILER the house isn’t really haunted.

Went for the Shining out of these choices, but I have to say that my all-time favorite haunted house movie is The Legend of Hell House.

Legend of Hell House creates an atmosphere that few other haunting films have achieved.. A solid story by Richard Matheson.. and let’s not forget the beautiful Pamela Franklin.

Good solid list, but missing The Others and The Changling. Would have to pick The Haunting.
