The Three Stooges are Sean, Jim and Benicio

Dan as the Three Stooges

Here’s what confuses me about a new Three Stooges movie: don’t you need the Three Stooges? Think about it. What if they made a new Abbot & Costello movie? Would it still be Abbot & Costello without Abbot & Costello? Or how about a Laurel & Hardy film? Wouldn’t these then be biopics of sorts? All of these comedy duos and trios built characters around their real life personas, so it’s sort of strange seeing other actors step into these roles. Could you imagine Rosie O’Donnel playing Roseanne Connor in a movie adaptation of Roseanne? Alright, I think I’ve made my point. ANYWAYS, the big news is the Farrelly Brothers have apparently cast their Stooges. We’ve got Sean Penn as Larry, Benicio Del Toro as Moe and Jim Carrey as Curly. Interesting. It’d be ballsy if they decided to change the characters names to Sean, Jim and Benicio.

I think Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro are pretty inspired choices. They seem a little outside-of-the-box at first, but both have reserved comic skills that should be taken advantage of more often. Jim Carrey though? A little obvious in my opinion. Apparently he plans to gain 40 pounds for the role, which should bring him to about a quarter of the size of the original Curly. As a fan of Dumb and Dumber, I’m glad to see Carrey teaming up with the Farrelly Brothers again, but if I had my say, I would’ve gone with John Goodman as Curly. After all, he did play ALL THREE Stooges in a classic Halloween episode of Roseanne. For that matter, the 12 year old version of Michael Fishman (DJ Connor) would make a great Moe. Finally, I’ll go with Laurie Metcalf as Larry. Perfect.

Awesome casting for the stooges. Maybe only just the 24&up demographic know of Jim Carrey’s great comedic skills, but it seems no one thinks he is funny since hasn’t done a lol-comedy film in the last 8 years. His In Living Color show days probably his best comedic moments imo. FJ comedy star poll has him at a whopping 4%. I dunno maybe Yes Man was hilarious. Never saw it.

  • I’d love to see a movie version of Roseanne, or better yet, a new show. Throw continuity out the window, bring all of the good parts of the cast back, oh yeah.

Three Stooges related, couldn’t care less. I guess it’s an American thing, because I’ve never seen anything with them.

  • Ask and you shall receive Kasper. Roseanne is supposedly working on a new family sitcom with herself playing the mother again.

One of the writers of Arrested Development is scripting the pilot.

  • I wonder what Sam Raimi will think.

  • Primal

Jeez, Roseanne should probably be doing a remake of the Golden Girls instead. Well with that hair, The Platinum Girls?

I’m confused Jay, were did you get this will not have some biopic elements? I can’t find anything on the web that sez it will be a straight up Stooge type film.

  • In the Variety article it confirms that it’s not a biopic:

“The film is not a biopic, but rather a comedy built around the antics of the three characters that Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Howard played in the Columbia Pictures shorts.”

  • Bob The Slob

that fact that this is really going to happen is probably funnier then the movie will be…

O.k. then I do sort of have a problem with it. I would love to see a Man On The Moon type show with some of their famous slapstick scenes redone. That would be great because you could see them all sore from working like 60 hours a week pumping out three films. You could get in to how they choreographed the stuff. And you could see their off screen personalities. Yeah, a reboot stooges is a lost opportunity.

  • A new Roseanne, ohhhh yessssssssss. You just made my day, Sean!

If John Goodman is back too then it’ll be the best thing since Roseanne ended.

This could be a follow up to the underrated genius that is Brain Donors, a reworking of Night At The Opera by The Marx Bros.

I have never seen anything regarding the Stooges, only glimpses in other films, it just something that was never shown over here and I’ve never actively sought out.

Wait… look at the picture again. From left to right don’t the heads look like: Sean (plus the hair), Greg, and Jay???

  • J

Kudos to Swarez – Brain Donors is a classic & one of my favorites. Really does justice to the Marx Bother’s genius.
