Here’s what confuses me about a new Three Stooges movie: don’t you need the Three Stooges? Think about it. What if they made a new Abbot & Costello movie? Would it still be Abbot & Costello without Abbot & Costello? Or how about a Laurel & Hardy film? Wouldn’t these then be biopics of sorts? All of these comedy duos and trios built characters around their real life personas, so it’s sort of strange seeing other actors step into these roles. Could you imagine Rosie O’Donnel playing Roseanne Connor in a movie adaptation of Roseanne? Alright, I think I’ve made my point. ANYWAYS, the big news is the Farrelly Brothers have apparently cast their Stooges. We’ve got Sean Penn as Larry, Benicio Del Toro as Moe and Jim Carrey as Curly. Interesting. It’d be ballsy if they decided to change the characters names to Sean, Jim and Benicio.
I think Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro are pretty inspired choices. They seem a little outside-of-the-box at first, but both have reserved comic skills that should be taken advantage of more often. Jim Carrey though? A little obvious in my opinion. Apparently he plans to gain 40 pounds for the role, which should bring him to about a quarter of the size of the original Curly. As a fan of Dumb and Dumber, I’m glad to see Carrey teaming up with the Farrelly Brothers again, but if I had my say, I would’ve gone with John Goodman as Curly. After all, he did play ALL THREE Stooges in a classic Halloween episode of Roseanne. For that matter, the 12 year old version of Michael Fishman (DJ Connor) would make a great Moe. Finally, I’ll go with Laurie Metcalf as Larry. Perfect.
