The Last House On The Left Review

A group of thugs abduct and torture two young girls before taking refuge from a storm in the home of one of their victims. When the girl’s parents learn of the crime, they decide to commit some atrocities of their own.

With just about every iconic horror film getting an update, it was only a matter of time before The Last House On The Left would be considered. The only question remaining being what form this notorious revenge film would take 37 years later, when something as brutal as the original probably wouldn’t see the light of day.

Some scholars believe that the myth of the werewolf arose in part due to a need to explain the deeds of history’s earliest serial killers. It was inconceivable that a normal man could commit such crimes. The criminals in The Last House On The Left remind me of that theory, wolves in ratty sheep’s clothing awkwardly straining to contain their bestial desires. The innocents fare no better in containing their rage, uncontrollable vulgarities sputtering out of the mouths of the upper class as they deal with the horror laid out before them.

I tried to watch the remake of The Last House On The Left as if I had never seen the original, but that lasted all of five minutes. As a polished piece of celluloid horror, I think 2009 version of The Last House On The Left works just fine, with a surprising tendency towards suspense over jump scares, and small, relatable injuries over gore. Coincidences from the original are given explanation and characters are more sharply defined. But strangely, by making the remake more realistic it inadvertently becomes less mythic, with the characters slipping into their roles far too quickly whereas in the original both the killers and the victims struggled against their destinies.

There’s something to be said for a film that decides not to reach beyond its grasp. The latest version of Last House On The Left is one of the better crafted horror movies to come out of Hollywood in the past few years, and is worth catching if you’re a fan of the genre. But as with most remakes, expect diminishing returns.

I really liked this film. What did you think of the new Krug? Garret Dillahunt.

well, if you stopped watching five minutes in, you should be very very glad.

you missed the brutal rape scene! it was the most horrible thing i have ever seen–maybe it’s because i’m a woman, so it makes me a little more sensitive about it…. but, it was totally uneccesary. that really shouldn’t have been shown. i’ve seen movies where they’ve implied a character has been raped, but never one that showed an entire scene of it.

  • If you’ve seen the original, then you will know that the rape scene is just as brutal if not more brutal and spends a long time on the screen. Don’t watch ‘I spit on your Grave’ either. The on screen rape scene in this film is about 15 minures long. This is the true horror of both these movies. What makes it scary is that it happens in the real world and could happen to anyone. With such a reputation that both these movies have why would a remake want to put the rape scenes off screen? Why would one want to ‘sterilise’ it or pull punches so to speak. If you don’t like this subject matter, then don’t go there. I hate rapists and they should pay dearly for their crimes which is why I like the final scenes of both films because the justice is dished out accordingly.

i think personally i would of found a more creative waay to torture the maan who raped my daughter….male part, nail, car batterie & jumper cables should do the trick! this whole movie after the rape scene i couldn’t quit thinking about my daughter. the sad thing is that this coulc happen to anyone! these parents aren’t bad parents…their daughter is 17 & allowing her to have some of her own freedom. after the rape scene i didn’t care too much for the movie. i don’t really understnd why they hve to show the actual scene.

I’m disgusted. This movie was a great example of the TOXINS WE POLLUTE THE YOUTH WITH! We are creating monsters by graphically showing things like this. The rape scene was RIDICULOUS! I am appalled- Wes Craven- SHAME ON YOU!

I agree, that movie was a complete waste of time, how can you say its art to show two teenage girls get stabbed and raped, i want my rental money back
