Rihanna Not Starring in Remake of The Bodyguard (Unfortunately)

I generally hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I’m slowly trying to accept that it’s a part of this whole blogging gig. So, are you sitting down? Alright… well, I’m sorry to say that the best rumour of the week has already been shot down: Rihanna will not be starring in a remake of The Bodyguard. Over the weekend, the New York Daily News had reported that Rihanna was spotted in New York where she was taking meetings about some scripts she had recently been offered. One of them was supposedly a remake of the 1992 Whitney Houston / Kevin Costner flick, with Channing Tatum in the running for the role of “The Bodyguard”.

Unfortunately, the whole thing just wasn’t true. Rihanna wasn’t even in New York this past weekend, according to a rep who called MTV News to clear things up. So I guess this means she won’t be starring in the Charlie’s Angels sequel either? Man… double downer. The truly sad thing is that this whole Chris Brown incident has made Rihanna a household name, and as a result, I’m guessing she’ll turn up on big screen a lot sooner than you might think.

  • So Rihanna was going to take the Chris Makepeace role, and Channing Tatum would replace Adam Baldwin? That would have been interesting.

  • Yes. Hey I just realized, was Drillbit Taylor actually supposed to be a remake of My Bodyguard? Pretty similar concept.

Why is it so unfortunate? Is Rihanna supposed to be some incredible actress or something? I’m not a fan so I don’t know to much about her other than her song “Umbrella” which I really hated. Unless you were being sarcastic?

  • Haha yes I was being sarcastic. Sorry for the confusion.

Didn’t one of you guys recently make the observation on the podcast that Hollywood is casting younger and younger these days? Both Rihanna and Channing Tatum are 8 years younger than the original’s actors! Damn you, Hollywood, you’re stuffing my movies full of kids AND you’re making me feel even older than I am!!! :)

  • Good point. Hey maybe this is what Taken 2 should be… just a whole movie of Liam Neeson working as a bodyguard for a young pop star.

  • Noelle

I honestly don’t think she would have done it justice anyway…

  • Sean,

Adam Baldwin had a small cameo in Drillbit Taylor as one of the potential bodyguards that answered their ad, if you remember. He had on the old Army jacket and everything.

  • Nice… I do remember that.

  • Great post! I heard the sarcasm :)

Hmm, maybe they should merge Taken 2 and a Bodyguard remake and Channing Tatum can be the bodyguard and the unknown-until-now son Liam Neeson and love interest of his daughter. Then you have the 2 guys both vying for the protection of the new singer/daughter.

I’m having *way* too much fun coming up with possiblities of a Taken sequel.

In the sequel to Taken Neeson’s daughter is abducted by aliens and he has to go kick some interstellar ass.
