Paramount Sets Transformers 3 Release Date Without Michael Bay’s Consent

Oh no they didn’t! Drunk on the success of Transformers, and encouraged by the buzz for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Paramount announced yesterday that they had already decided on a release date for the yet-to-be-titled Transformers 3. Once again, they are looking at the Independence Day weekend of July 1st, 2011. And really who can blame them for wanting to get the word out as soon as possible? There is only so much real estate available during the summer blockbuster season, and you want to stake your claim early. Unfortunately for them, there’s just one problem: Michael Bay does not approve.
Bay had this to say on the message board for his website, Shoot for the Edit:
“I said I was taking off a year from Transformers. Paramount made a mistake in dating Transformers 3 – they asked me on the phone – I said yes to July 4 – but for 2012 – whoops! Not 2011!!! That would mean I would have to start prep in September. No way. My brain needs a break from fighting robots.”
Oh snap! Someone at Paramount is getting fired over this for sure! Seriously though, it just seems to me like Michael Bay wants to be the guy in control. He loves making the studio folks a little uncomfortable, and he loves being the hot shot director who can set his own rules. My guess is he will agree to do it anyway, once they offer him a few more gazillion dollars. What do you think… would you like to see someone else take over the Transformers franchise? Can you see Paramount actually handing over the reins to someone else?
