J.J. Abrams Producing Diamond Heist Movie Based on True Story

In the wake of the success of Cloverfield, we’ve been seeing J.J. Abrams’s name attached to a lot of upcoming projects lately; projects that may or may not see the light of day, but projects that are intriguing nonetheless. Last year he optioned the rights to a New York Times article about a high-end apartment that was renovated by architect Eric Clough to include all kinds of puzzles and hidden compartments in order to amuse the kids of its owners. Strange but true. Now Abrams is turning his attention to the incredible true story of what has been called the biggest diamond heist of all time.
Joshua Davis has an article in the upcoming issue of Wired Magazine about the robbery of the Antwerp Diamond Center in February 2003. The thieves made off with at least $100 million in loot which has never been recovered. Mastermind Leonardo Notarbartolo was arrested that same month, but has only now taken credit for the crime. You might be wondering why J.J. Abrams is so interested in turning this story into a movie. Well, the article goes into great detail on how they managed to pull it off, complete with diagrams and maps. It’s certainly something geeks will be able to appreciate. With the popularity of Inside Man, The Bank Job and even the documentary Man on Wire, it seems like there is a lot of interest in heist films at the moment. What do you think, will this story make for a great movie, and is Abrams the right man to make it happen?
