Monday Morning Box Office Report: Watchmen Get Witch Slapped

No big surprise, but the People’s Elbow won out over Zack Snyder’s Watchmen at the box office this weekend, which dropped about 60% from its first week. The Rock showed why his charisma and squeaky clean image are a hot commodity in Hollywood these days with a $25 million opening for Race to Witch Mountain. The Last House on the Left opened at #3 with $14.7 million, while Miss March bombed hard with just $2.35 million, just barely squeaking into the top 10. Overall, box office numbers were the lowest they’ve been for the spring break in 13 years, perhaps indicating the quality of the releases that out there right now.

1. Race to Witch Mountain — $25M
2. Watchmen — $18.1M
3. The Last House on the Left — $14.7M
4. Taken — $6.65M
5. Madea Goes to Jail — $5.13M
6. Slumdog Millionaire — $5.03M
7. Paul Blart: Mall Cop — $3.1M
8. He’s Just Not That Into You — $2.9M
9. Coraline — $2.65M
10. Miss March — $2.35M

It’s still amazing that Taken is still in the top 5 after all this time.
If that’s not the sleeper hit of the year I don’t know what is.

  • That is amazing, Swarez. But what about Paul Blart: Mall Cop still being in the top 10!

I didn’t expect Race to Witch Mountain to do so well. I would hate to be a movie executive. The general public is so unpredictable.

  • The theater I went to see Watchmen in was PACKED. Maybe that had to do with IMAX though.
