500 Days of Summer Trailer Starring Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt

One of the biggest hits at Sundance this year was Marc Webb’s 500 Days of Summer, which supposedly earned a standing ovation at its premiere. To me it looks like just another indie relationship dramedy, albeit a fairly well made one. Fox Searchlight picked up the movie for distribution, and now the first full trailer has gone online this week.
The movie stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel as Tom and Summer, a guy and girl who fall in love and then watch their relationship fall apart. From what I understand, the movie uses flashbacks to tell the story of how they got to know each other. I like the look of the film, but I do worry that the dialogue may come from the Diablo Cody school of “trying to be too clever”.
The screenplay was written by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, who previously did The Pink Panther 2… I am guessing this is a step up from that, at least. Like all good indie flicks, it also has an essential soundtrack for hipsters that includes songs from Feist, Belle and Sebastian, Spoon, Simon & Garfunkel, and yes, The Smiths. 500 Days of Summer hits select theatres on July 17th; check out the trailer below.
