Wachowski Brothers to Direct New Superman Trilogy?

Who is going to be taking over the Superman franchise for Warner Brothers? This is the big question that a lot of people have been wondering ever since it was announced that they were planning to reboot the series. The Man of Steel might still be played by Brandon Routh, but it looks like Bryan Singer is long gone, and possibly turning his attention back to a Logan’s Run remake. So what big name directors could Warner Brothers possibly turn to for a guaranteed blockbuster hit? Hmm… how about The Wachowski Brothers?

A supposedly reliable scooper for Ain’t It Cool News claims that The Wachowskis have been asked to take over the reins for Superman, and in doing so, develop a brand new trilogy. Their next movie after Ninja Assassin was possibly going to be Plastic Man, but it was kind of put on hold because of “a major shake up of projects at WB”. This is all coming from James McTeigue, who was going to be their second unit director on the Plastic Man movie, and who may now take over the director’s chair.

“He stated the Wachowski Brothers had been approached to re-boot the franchise as a trilogy and they are currently reviewing their options as its like being asked to take the final play in a superbowl final. Says if they do agree, he will likely either succumb to providing second unit support on the movie or will champion the directorship of Plastic Man – He started to giggle as he stated its like a young child for the Brothers and they wont give that up easily.”

Well I’d certainly be interested to see what they could do with the Superman series, especially since they’d hopefully make it less of a soap opera and more sci-fi oriented. It may sound like an outlandish rumour, but at this point the Brothers seem to be the go-to guys for Warner Brothers whenever they need a major hit (and apparently Speed Racer didn’t ruin their reputation). On the other hand, I’m really curious about this Plastic Man movie too and I hope it still gets made one way or another. There was also another report going around the web that The Wachowskis are planning to team up with Tom Tykwer to adapt David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas, so they could have a lot on their plate in the very near future. Stay tuned for more info as this story develops.

Wasn’t The Matrix kind of like an updated Superman reboot?
    Neo discovering who he is…
Coming to terms with his powers…
    Saving mankind…
    Being able to fly…

    Think about it.

  • @ matt — yeah, and Neo’s sweet ass leather trenchcoat was like Superman’s sweet ass cape.

i’d be into this; I think the wachowskis would be a good fit for supermans.

i’m not against this either…and as many problems as I had with Returns…Routh was not the problem at all, i hope they give him another shot.

  • I was one of the few people that liked Speed Racer and if they can not ruin things like they did with Matrix, it could work.

find by me, those trannies have bought a building back here in their hometown of Chicago and are creating a digital studio like buckethead Robert Rodriguez. means more film, workers and dollars for chitown.

  • I still can’t sit through of Speed Racer in it’s entirety and I own it (I’m telling you it looks AWESOME on BD) but the reason for that is because of the script.

As long as the Wachowskis have a good writer to work off of then this is probably the best director news we will get for this franchise!

This sounds like a very good fit!

    On the other hand…

For me, the Matrix kinda lost it’s thrill once Neo became a full superman-figure at the beginning of the second movie. They’ll run into the same challenge with the Superman-movies so I hope they can raise the stakes for our unbeatable hero.

I am a huge Superman fan and totally enjoyed the return of Superman. I am hoping that it will lead to another Superboy, or dad gets to know him and the powers that was inherited.
