The Least Essential Blu-ray Releases So Far

I firmly believe that every movie, no matter how bad, should have a shot at being released on DVD. Let’s face it, not many people own VCRs anymore and VHS tapes deteriorate over time — if something is to be preserved for future generations, a digital transfer is required. However, when it comes to movies being released on Blu-ray, I think we can all afford to be a little more discerning (at least until it becomes the defacto standard, which may, in fact, never happen).

There are a lot of movies that simply won’t benefit from a high-definition update, because (a) they look like crap to begin with, or (b) no one cares about them. I understand why all the newest major releases are usually put out on Blu-ray now, but there are also some pretty puzzling back catalog titles out there. Which is precisely why I found this post over at Videogum so amusing. They point out some rather questionable discs including Chain Reaction and National Security (although I gotta disagree with Short Circuit). I would also add the Ben Stein documentary Expelled to the mix, Space Buddies, and (grudgingly) Faces of Death. Can you think of any other useless Blu-rays that are out now or coming soon?

  • Damn Sean, harsh! As if Ben Stein’s Expelled needed another kick in the nuts.

  • Bas

That DVD-cover from ‘Expelled’ is pretty cool, though. Especially the 4-star recommendation from Ben Stein himself!

  • Itchy-finger

Well that just makes me feel like an ass for buying Chain Reaction on blu-ray.

  • Matt

What are you talking about, Sean? Chain Reation is Awesome! And I’m totally serious.

  • Matt

    *Reaction

  • I stand corrected. Chain Reaction is an essential Blu-ray release.

Also, re: Expelled… I’ve only seen the trailer but all biases aside, it just didn’t seem like high-def worthy imagery.

  • Bob The Slob

Expelled was the worst, most disgusting, ignorant, backwards, illogical piece of garbage I have ever seen in a theater.

  • Liz

I used to think that most comedies didn’t need to be on Blu-ray since it’s not like they have super amazing special effects or cinematography that benefits from high definition, but having seen a couple of them on Blu-ray now I’ve come to change my mind. I want everything available on Blu-ray, all the time, even if the quality doesn’t get that much better.

  • swarez

I buy comedies on regular ass DVD but movies filled with texture and nice colors on Blu.

Is that a joke? I was looking at that to.

  • Bas

Probably the best joke of the movie…

  • Matt

    Probably the best joke ever.
