Five More G.I. Joe Posters… But Where is the Trailer?

Things have been oddly quiet surrounding the upcoming G.I. Joe live action movie as of late. The Stephen Sommers flick is supposedly still on target for its August 7th release date, but there seems to be a lot more buzz building for Michael Bay’s Transformers sequel than the first installment in the upcoming G.I. Joe franchise. Maybe that’s because the first Transformers movie is already a proven success, but I can’t help but wonder what’s going on with the marketing for G.I. Joe.

This week they’ve released 5 new posters featuring Duke, Scarlett, The Baroness, Ripcord and Snake Eyes. Yawn. Unfortunately, there is nothing new to see here (aside from another reminder that EVERYONE in the movie apparently wears black), and it certainly seems like they’re buying time until they have something more to show. Could it be because an early test screening of the G.I. Joe trailer was not very well-received? Someone posted a review of a possible one-minute Super Bowl spot over at Nuke The Fridge back in December, and didn’t have many kind things to say about it. Among other things, they compared the Storm Shadow/Snake Eyes fight to the early ’90s Double Dragon movie. Ouch.

Recently, Stephen Sommers told Entertainment Weekly that the movie has “an underwater battle under the polar icecap that’s Thunderball times 10″. That sounds great, but until I actually see proof of this, I will continue to have my doubts. With the right vision, I still think G.I. Joe could make for a killer action movie, but what are the odds Stephen Sommers is the man with that vision?

  • No I’m afraid he’s not. I’m a huge G.I. Joe fan and I’m willing to give it a chance, but I’ve not seen a whole lot of good so far.

After the turds that were The Mummy and Van Helsing I’ve learned to stay away from anything Stephen Sommers comes near.

  • Come on Shawn. I bet those designers spent weeks on those posters! How would you like it if they went to your work and slapped the broom out of your hand? No trailer? Worse and worse advance buzz? Pshaw! Just look at those shiny posters! All over town!
