Judd Apatow Moving from Comedy to Horror?

It’s kind of a slow news week what with everyone still at Sundance and everything, but here’s an interesting nugget of news that is coming straight out of Park City. Devin from CHUD had a chance to chat with Bill Hader (who was there for the premiere of Adventureland) and found out that there is a distinct possibility that we may see a Judd Apatow-produced horror flick in the near future.
Hader revealed that, at Judd Apatow’s bidding, he and SNL writer Simon Rich have penned a script for a slasher film. He describes it as “Straw Dogs meets Halloween meets Home Alone meets Monster Squad”, which (if he is serious) would certainly be an intriguing combination.
“It is definitely about guys nowadays, that idea that you watch fucked up shit on TV, how violence in our culture – this sounds really hoity toity – you watch fucked up reality shows, I love true crime shows. The idea of that thing coming to your house, and what do you do? I would shit my pants. That’s basically what the movie is about. What if that guy decided to come to your house? What would you and your dipshit friends do about it?”
The movie would, of course, still have comedic elements in it as well. I think it would be cool to see Apatow and his posse try something a little bit different (as long as it doesn’t end up being another Scary Movie clone) but I find it interesting that Kevin Smith was also supposed to be working on a horror flick for his next project. Is this another example of Apatow following in Kevin Smith’s footsteps? The two definitely seem to have some indirect influence on each other. Either way, you can bet we’ll keep our ear to the ground for more info on this.
