The Dark Knight Smashes Blu-ray Sales Record

It stands to reason that any movie that breaks the record for biggest opening weekend box office might also sell more than a few copies on DVD, but of course, with Blu-ray still a burgeoning format, there is another record up for grabs as well. Needless to say, The Dark Knight earned itself more bragging rights this week after selling more than 600,000 copies on Blu-ray — within the first day of release alone! This completely shatters a record set earlier this year by Iron Man, which sold 400,000 copies within its first week.
It’s true that there are probably a lot of Blu-ray players that have been sold since Iron Man came out, but the simple fact of the matter is that it’s not even close. So what are the chances that The Dark Knight will also go on to become the single best-selling DVD of all time? In order to do that, it will have to take down Pixar’s Finding Nemo, which has moved over 30 million units as of last year. That will definitely be a little harder to match, especially now that the market is being splintered by Blu-ray. At any rate, I think that the DVD and Blu-ray records are slightly more significant than anything box office-related, because you can trick a lot of people into the theatre with good marketing even if your movie sucks, but people will only buy your movie on DVD if they truly love it and want to see it again and again. TDK certainly falls into that category.
