Monday Morning Box Office Report: The Punisher Misfires

Looks like Frank Castle may not get his revenge after all… Punisher: War Zone bombed hard this weekend, earning just $4 million and the #8 position in its opening weekend. It’s going to be a long climb to recoup the film’s $35 million budget, but maybe this will finally prove that a reboot can’t always improve on what came before it. (Then again, some of the people who actually saw the movie seemed to genuinely like it.) Four Christmases cleaned up easily again this weekend, pocketing another $18 million, while Twilight and Bolt continued to do strong business as well. Australia and Quantum of Solace rounded out the top 5.

1. Four Christmases — $18.2M
2. Twilight — $13.2M
3. Bolt — $9.7M
4. Australia — $7M
5. Quantum of Solace — $6.6M
6. Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa — $5.1M
7. Transporter 3 — $4.5M
8. Punisher: War Zone — $4M
9. Cadillac Records — $3.5M
10. Role Models — $2.62M

Other than a few movie geek website, did anyone really talk about Punisher. Plus it’s a strange film to open around christmas.

War Zone wasnt a “good” flick…but it was really accurate (to the Garth Ennis run) and it kicked alot of violent ass…and Ray stevenson was pitch perfect casting.

  • Not good? Dude, he punches a guy’s face off!

  • I’m surprised Punisher failed this hard…makes me wonder if The Spirit has a chance on Christmas Day.

Matt…you do make a great point…I take it back…it was rather good (for what it was trying to be)
