New To Theatres This Weekend: Cadillac Records, Frost/Nixon, Punisher: War Zone

The only new major release this weekend is Punisher: War Zone, which will certainly have its work cut out for it if it hopes to catch some of the other juggernauts currently holding the box office hostage. Once again, most of the interesting films are being hidden away from moviegoers and debuting in very few theatres. Among these limited releases we have the music biopic Cadillac Records, Ron Howard’s Frost/Nixon, and Steve McQueen’s IRA hunger strike film Hunger. Gus Van Sant’s Milk is also expanding slightly, but not by much. What are you checking out this weekend?

Punisher: War Zone
Cadillac Records (limited)
Nobel Son (limited)
Frost/Nixon (limited)
Hunger (limited)
Extreme Movie (limited)
The Black Balloon (limited)
Ciao (limited)
Milk (expanding)

I was disappointed to find out that Cadillac Records is only being released today in the U.S. despite the fact that I kept seeing it on Canadian sites as “coming soon”. Very frustrating.

Still waiting for Slumdog Millionaire, it opens around here next weekend.

  • nothing much interesting besides Cadillac Records
I hope to see a good job on Mos Def’s part

I agree with Liz. I thought for sure that the film would be here in Toronto, as I heard the ads for it everywhere only to discover it’s a limited release. Not impressed.

Kim, I think the other frustrating thing was that they were explicitly advertising it as being released on December 5th here. I totally get that there will be limited releases that only open in Toronto after they’ve already opened in New York and L.A. (so, a “less limited” release before going wide), but I kept seeing it listed on lists of new movies for Toronto on December 5th. Whoever was in charge of the marketing for this movie really screwed up somewhere.

Hmm…I might just bite the bullet and head to Toronto one day next week for Milk and Slumdog Millionaire. It’s so retarded that the most interesting movies are always limited releases.

  • Thomas Jane did a decent job as the Punisher last time; too bad they didn’t bring him back for this installment as well
