Smallville Creators Hired to Rewrite Robotech Movie

We’ve got an update this week on the Robotech feature film in development from producer Tobey Maguire. Earlier this year we heard that The Empire Strikes Back / Raiders of the Lost Ark screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan had been hired to either touch up or rewrite a script by newcomer Craig Zahler. Now it looks like Kasdan too has been replaced by a new team of writers — specifically Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, best known as the creators and head writers on the TV series Smallville.
The Hollywood Reporter says that the duo bring “action and geek cred to the table”, which is funny because that’s what I thought Kasdan had going for him as well. In fact, people seem to be less excited about the prospect of Gough and Millar being involved, even though they did contribute to the Spider-Man 2 script. Yes, they also wrote The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, but Kasdan himself has a few stinkers under his belt including Stephen King’s Dreamcatcher (which he co-wrote and directed). Either way, it looks like Robotech is turning into another one of those movies that could very well have 10 different writers in the credits by the time it makes it to the screen. Let’s just hope that whoever directs it will be able pull something coherent out it.
