A trailer has arrived online for the only Weinstein release that is still expected to hit theatres before the end of the year, Stephen Daldry’s The Reader. Based on the novel by Bernhard Schlink, it takes place in post-war Germany where a young lawyer is involved in a war crimes trial, and is horrified to find a former lover among the defendants. The trailer makes it seem like Atonement, The English Patient and Schindler’s List all rolled up into one; in other words, a total shoo-in for this year’s Oscars.
With a title like The Reader, I have to admit that this movie was about as far off my radar as it could possibly be. That said, I like Kate Winslet a lot, and there is a part of me that is curious about this story, especially since it is one of the few Holocaust-themed movies that was actually written by a German. Daldry previously directed Billy Elliot and The Hours. The Reader hits theatres on December 10th; check out the trailer below.
