David Gordon Green to Direct Steve Niles’ Freaks of the Heartland

Director David Gordon Green is a hot commodity right now in Hollywood after moving from the world of indie dramas to mainstream comedies, but he seems to be doing a good job of riding the momentum from Pineapple Express while also avoiding being pigeon-holed into any one specific genre or style of film. He had been rumoured for a while to be possibly directing a remake of Dario Argento’s Suspiria, but he has since lined up a “fantasy comedy” with Danny McBride called Your Highness in addition to writing an animated series for Fox and a movie called Goat. If that wasn’t enough, he is now jumping into the horror genre with another new project based on a comic book by Steve Niles (30 Days of Night).
Green has been tapped to direct Freaks of the Heartland, a Dark Horse comic mini-series that takes place in a rural town in Middle America where mutant children are being born. Their parents apparently all share a dark secret of some sort. I am guessing that the mention of “rural Middle America” is what brought David Gordon Green into the picture, since that’s where he likes to set most of his films. His only previous foray into the thriller genre, Undertow starring Josh Lucas and Kristen Stewart, is a very underrated movie in my opinion. I’m looking forward to see what he does with this, although at this point I have no idea where it will falls in his overwhelming slate of upcoming projects.
