Cormac McCarthy’s The Road Likely Delayed to 2009

A couple of weeks ago when reports came out about The Weinstein Company pushing back Killshot to 2009, I pointed out that another upcoming Weinstein release could potentially be in trouble. John Hillcoat’s adaptation of the Cormac McCarthy post-apocalyptic novel The Road is one of my most anticipated movies for the remainder of 2008, and it was originally scheduled for release on November 14th. However, with that date less than a month away, you have to wonder why we still haven’t even seen a trailer for the flick.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Road is indeed lagging behind in post-production, and has been quietly shifted from a November release to December. The movie is expected to have Oscar potential, which means they’d like to have it hit theatres in time to qualify for the Academy Awards. Still, there is a chance it could slip to 2009, since Stephen Daldry’s The Reader is also a potential award contender for The Weinsteins. Execs are expected to decide the fate of The Road sometime this week, so we’ll keep our ear to the ground for more info.

It would be a real shame if the movie didn’t get released this year. The source material is most definitely award-worthy. I read the book last month after seeing some of the production photos for the film. It looks like Viggo is very commited to the role and that he’s pouring his heart out. And I just saw a couple of photos. I hope that the movie does not come out at the beginning of next year, because I think a lot of people would forget about it by the time the Oscars roll around in 2010.

  • This is the only thing that worries me is that if they can’t make the 2008 cut off, they might wait until the next Oscar season to release it, which means we’d have to wait like a whole extra year!

On the plus side, I guess it would give me more time to read the book.

I saw the screening of the raw movie last night in NYC and I loved it. Some people in the audience did not like it that much, but as a true fan of the book and a avid fan of McCarthy, I was pleased and thought the movie did an excellent job portraying the novel’s intent. I hope they release it this year because I would love to see it again. Mortensen and McPhee were outstanding, and some of the scenes are still haunting me today. Anyone who has read the book (and a lot of negative comments about the movie last night were from those who have not read it) should love Hillcoat’s adaptation. Hopefully they will not change too much to cater to those that don’t understand what this story is about.

  • Hi.
The trailer of The Road, unfortunately, does not seem very good, very far from McCarthy’s novel !

    Regards.
