Weekly Poll Results: Best Mob Movie

The results are in, and it looks like last week’s poll wasn’t much of a contest as Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas easily took home the title of “Best Mob Movie” with over 35% of the votes. The Godfather probably would have had a shot at beating it except that the votes were split between part 1 and 2, leaving them at #2 and #3 respectively. I’m kinda surprised that The Untouchables didn’t get more love, and obviously Donnie Brasco was a bit outclassed (although it’s a personal favourite of mine).

1. Goodfellas — 35.6%
2. The Godfather — 19.2%
3. The Godfather Part II — 12.3%
4. Scarface — 9.6%
5. The Departed — 7.3%
6. Miller’s Crossing — 6.8%
7. The Untouchables — 3.2%
8. Road to Perdition — 2.7%
9. Casino — 2.3%
10. Donnie Brasco — 0.9%

hmmm The Untouchables isn’t really about the mob it’s more about law enforcement and it’s got some good scenes with de Palma’s homage to the steps of Odessa and all that but it’s pretty ridiculous. I mean I love seeing Billy Drago thrown off a building (or falling out of a helicopter that is crazy high up like in Delta Force 2: The Columbian Connection) but a “good” movie is not the place for that sort of stuff.

Scarface what the fuck are people thinking?

It is a crime that Godfather 2 isn’t #1. I predict a coordinated hit on all of the heads of the Film Junk Families (including Reed). Plus I can picture a horse head in Greg’s bed. It’s as good as the original Godfather, plus the DeNiro flashbacks make it even better (it’s actually the only DeNiro performance I can stand).

  • The Untouchables is a horrible abomination of celluloid and should be last but I’m still liking where Film Junkies vote in these polls.

  • The list is pretty much what I expected. I just can’t get into Miller’s Crossing though. The fat son of the Italian mob boss Johnny Caspar is the highlight of the film for me.

  • In my opinion, The Untouchables is much better than Scarface. Not strictly a mob movie though. Godfather II is a better film than the first, just like Emperor Strikes Back is a better film than A New Hope. But there’s such a tangible emotional relationship (totally understandable) that people have with the first of those two series that I think explains why they’ll always be second in fan opinion polls.

But yeah, all those scenes in Godfather II with Robert DeNiro are gold. And, again, Once Upon A Time in America, the only film I can think of that deals with Jewish-American gangsters, shoulda been on this list! It’s one of the few movies that can still get me choked up over the desperate fate of absolutely despicable characters (probably some of the most despicable in the history of film). The ability to cause the audience to temporarily root for desperate, scummy men is the sign of a good gangster flick. Definitely rivals The Godfather in the soundtrack/score field as well.

I agree that Once Upon a Time in America should have been on the list. Major oversight.

  • Donnie Brasco was the best out of these, The Departed was good, Scarface, & the Godfather flicks are completely overrated :[
